HERVEY D. CLARK. OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 22, 1906. Serial No. 335,758,
- 'Patented Jan. 22, 1907.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERVEY D. CLARK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door openers designed more particularly for use on screendoors, but capable of use on ordinary doors.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide means for conveniently opening a screen-door with the foot, so that a person with both hands full can open a screen-door toward him against the tension of the ordinary spring-hinges of such doors.
Another object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to be secured to a screen-door or other door near the lower free edge of the same which can be conveniently operated by the toe of the foot for opening the door.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a door-opener of this character with a rubber shield to prevent injury to the shoe of the user.
These and other objectsmay be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of a screen-door having my door opener attached thereto and showing a foot in dotted lines in position to open the door. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the door-opener on an enlarged scale.
Iteferring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a screen-door, and 2 is the door-casing. My door-opener comprises a shank 3, having a gimlet-pointed end 4, and the opposite end of said shank being bent downward to form a toe-engaging loop 5,
from which extends a member 6, bent upward at 7 to form a brace 8, and a horizontal arm 9,disposed above the plane of the shank 3 and the member 6 to bear against the door when the toe-engaging loop 5 is engaged by the foot of the operator. The arm 9 is connected by an inclined portion 10, terminating in a hook 1 1 which engages the shank 3 at some distance from the threaded point 4.
If desired, a tubular rubber shield 12 may be secured upon the toe-engaging loop 5 0i the opener to prevent injury to the shoe of the user.
As shown in Fig. 1, my door-opener is se cured at a point near the lower free edge of the door in position to be engaged by the foot for pulling the door open.
Persons using screen-doors have found it very inconvenient to open the same with their hands full, and my invention will be found very convenient for use in opening screen-doors where persons are required to carry articles in and out.
My device may be manufactured at slight cost, can be quickly ap lied to a door, and has been found very e cient and useful for its purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is" 1. A door-opener comprising a threaded shank, a downwardly-extending toeengaging loop projecting at opposite sides of said shank, a bearing-arm extending backward from the loop to bear against the door above the shank, and a protecting-shield on said toe-engaging loop.
2. A door-opener adapted to be secured to a screendoor at a point near the bottom edge of the same and near the swinging side of the door at a height sufficient to permit the tilted end of the foot to engage said opener, and said opener comprising a laterally-extended toe-engaging loop, a shank. extending from said loop, and provided with a threaded end to engage the door, an inclined brace, and a horizontal bearing-arm to bear against the door above the shank, said bearing-arm extended and formed into a hook to engage the shank, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERVEY D. CLARK.
Witnesses W. P, BUTT, RoBT. J. WILLIAMS.
