APPLICATION IILBD MAY 11, 1911.

JONATHAN ROBERTS, OF RUMNEY DEPOT, NEW HAMPSHIRE.

HUNG-ENGAGING CLIP.

To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JONATHAN Ronnirrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rumney Depot, in the county of Grafton, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rung- Engaging Clips; and l dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in rung engaging clips, and has for its principal object the provision of means whereby a bracket platform may be readlly attached to or detached from a ladder and when in an attached position will be securely retained against accidental displacement.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will automatically return to a position of closure after disengagement.

These and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are shown in their preferred embodiment in the drawings described in the specification and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of the device when attached to the rung of a ladder in operative position. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation of the device showing its assembled relation with a platform bracket. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 4: is a side elevation taken on the line 33 of Fig. 3.

Referring now to the drawings throughout which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts, 5 designates the stiles and 66 the rungs of an ordinary ladder.

My invention consists in a rung engaging clip adapted to secure a bracket to the rung of a ladder. This rung engaging clip includes a member 1 secured at one end to the platform bracket and bent upon itself at its Specification of Letters Patent.

free end and forming a substantially U- shaped recess adapted to receive the rung of a ladder. The free end of said member 1 is subsequently bent upon itself forming a U- shaped keeper portion. Coacting with the member 1 is the latch member 2. This latch member is rigidly mounted on a bolt 3, said bolt being projected through an opening 1 in the member Q. Mounted around the stem of the bolt is a helical spring member 5 the end 6 of which is fixedly mounted in a radial recess 7 formed in the operating handle 8. This operating handle 8 is mounted on the bolt adjacent its head and is provided with a recess 9 corresponding to and in alinement with the opening 4: in the mem ber 1. An ordinary nut 10 is provided at the bolt-end 11 to maintain the various parts in assembled relation. Mounted on the upper guide of the U-shaped portion of the member 1 is a pivoted clip member 12 secured to the said U-shaped portion by the apertured member 13.

The operation of my device is as follows: When attaching the clips to a ladder rung, the operator throws the clip 12 out of en gagement with the latch member 2 and operates the handle to disengage the latch member 2 from the keeper portion of member 1 against the tension of the helical spring. The ladder rung 66 being disposed in the U'shaped portion of member 1, the handle is released and the latch member automatically returns to a position of engagement with the keeper portion of member 1. The clip member 12 is then dropped into operative position thereby preventing any accidental disengagement of the latch mem her with the keeper member.

What is claimed is:

A rung engaging clip comprising a substantially vertically disposed member having a rung engaging depression formed therein, the upper end of said member terminating in a U-shaped recess, a clip pivotally connected to the member and adjacent the recess, a latch member having its upper end det-achably engaged in said recess and prevented from becoming accidentally displaced by said clip, a bolt rotatably supported by the vertically disposed member and having one end fixed to the lower end of the latch In testimony whereof, I afiix my signamember, a handle having one end fixed to ture, in presence of two witnesses. the other end of the bolt, and adapted to rotate the bolt to swing the upper end of the JONATHAN ROBERTS 5 latch member from engagement with said Witnesses:

recess, and means to automatically cause en- FRED ROBERTS,

gagement of the latch member and recess. H. W. HERBERT.
