SAMPLE-TRUNK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented raul 22,1907.
Application iiled May 31, 1906. Serial No. 319,548.
To al?, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. Brees, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sample-Trunks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which* Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sampletrunk embodying the features of my invention, and Fig'. 2 is an enlarged sectional view showing the connection between the table and the rear wall of the trunk.
This invention relates to sample-trunks, such as are used by commercial travelers for carrying the goods or articles which they sell and the object of my invention is to provide a trunk having a display-table which can be moved into an operative position when the trunk is open to hold the goods or yarticles which the traveler is offering for sale.
I have herein shown the preferred form of my invention as consisting of a trunk provided with a hinged front wall and a plurality of trays which can be extended when the trunk is open and a movable display-table that is located between the trays and the rear wall of the trunk when the trunk is closed and which is supported in an operative position by the lid of the trunk when the trunk is open.
Referring to the drawings, which represent the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates a plurality of trays which are superimposed upon each other inside of the trunk, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. These trays are pivotally connected together by links 2, and the front wall 3 of the trunk is hinged, so that said trays can be extended, as shown bydotted lines in Fig. 1, the to most tray being provided with supportingegs 4. A table 5 is interposed between the trays 1 and the rear wall 6 of the trunk when said trays\are in their closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, and
said table is provided on its under side and preferably near its ends with guide-rods 7 that extend through eyes 8 in the rear wall 6 of the trunk, as shown in Fig. 2. Preferably said eyes S are pivotally mounted, herein shown as a ball-and-socket connection, and when the lid 9 of the trunk is open said table can be drawn out and arrangedl in a horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, to support the articles which it is desired to display, the lid of the trunk preferably acting as a support for the table. There is no danger of displacing the table when it is in its operative position, and thus upsetting the articles contained thereon, as the table is at all times connected to the rear wall of the trunk.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have devised a sample-trunk containing a display-table which takes up practically no room when the trunk is closed and which canbe moved into an operative position when the trunk is open to hold the goods or articles which the traveler is offering for sale, the table being provided with a suitable covering to act as a background for the goods which are being displayed, and thus set them o to better advantage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sample-trunk comprising a lid, a table arranged inside of the trunk adjacent the rear wall thereof and being adapted to be drawn out of the trunk and arranged in a horizontal position on the lid when it is opened, a rod connected to the table, and an eye in the back of the trunk through which said rod extends; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 25th day of May, 1906.
GEORGE F. BIGGS.
