Unrrn snares narnn Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
Application filed June 18, 1906. Serial No. 322,348.
To add whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NANCY S. A. E. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holland, in the county of Bell, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to beds, and more particularly to invalid-beds, and has for its object to provide a bed including a bed-pan and a specially-arranged mattress for use in connection therewith.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description.
In the drawings a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1 taken through the re ceptacle. Fig; 3 is a detail view showing the strap. Fig 4 is a cross-section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a bed having a mattress 5 and including a spring 6. In the spring, at the foot end thereof, there is a metallic pan-receptacle 7, which is open at its foot end and at its top. A pan 8 is provided and lies within the receptacle, it being possible to slide the pan from the open end of the receptacle, and the pan has lateral flanges 9, which rest upon similar flanges 10, carried by the recep- At its foot end the panhas an opening with which a discharge-pipe 11 communicates, and the bottom of the pan slants downwardly from its head to its foot end.
A cover 13 is provided for the pan and has its side portions bent under and toward each other to form guides which receive the lateral flanges 9 of the pan, the cover being thus slidable into and out of operative position. The cover has a central elongated opening 14 therein, and at the foot end of the opening there is an upwardly-extending guard 15, which extends over the opening for a short distance and which is secured to the cover at the sides of the opening, the guard being thus somewhat conical in form. The mattress 5 consists of a body portion bifurcated at its foot end, and the resultant l spaced portions are connected bya strap 16 at their outer ends, a removable filling-piece 17 being provided for the bifurcation-and being held in place by the strap, which is detachable to permit of removal of the filling-piece. The bifurcation lies above the opening 14 of the cover 13, and when the pan is to be used the filling-piece is removed, as will be understood. All liquid passes off through the pipe 11, and t e pan may be easily removed, as will be seen, to permit of cleaning.
The bed includes a foot-board 19, which is provided with an opening 20, through which the removable portions may be withdrawn, and a head-board 21 is also provided.
What is claimed is 1. An invalid-bed comprising supporting portions, a receptacle open at its top and one end, a pan in the receptacle and movable outwardly through the end thereof, a cover for the pan having an opening therein, a mattress upon the support and having an opening over that of the cover, and a removable filling-piece in the opening of the mattress.
l 2. An invalid-bed comprising foot and h head boards, one having an opening therein,
a spring, a pan removably mounted in the spring, said opening being disposed for passage of the pan therethrough, and a mattress upon the spring, said mattress having an opening over the pan.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NANCY S. A. E. MYERS.
