Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, HUGH L. APPLETON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shelby, in the county of Shelby and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in bed attachments, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide an attachment for hospital beds or the like,

easily removed and replaced, for containing sponges and instruments, and so arranged as not to interfere with the use of the Kelly pad or similar drainage devices.

Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a bed provided with the improvement, Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a partial longitudinal section of the attachment, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the same.

The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, consists of a jointed bar, and composed in the present instance of three sections, 1, 2 and 3, pivoted together as at 4, andprovided at the free ends of the outer sections, with a means whereby the bar may be detachably connected with the side rail 5 of a bed. The means referred to, consists of a yoke 6, one of whose arms 7 engages the innerface of the bed rail, and the other 8 is provided with a set screw 9, which is adapted to engage the outer face of the bar and it will be evident that by loosening the set screw, the bar may be easily disengaged from the rail. One of the yokes 6, is provided on its body portion with a lateral lug 10, having a transverse opening through which passes a rod 11, and a set screw 12 traverses the lug and engages the rod to retain it in adjusted position. A jointed arm 13, is pivoted by one end to the rod, the joints of the arm being connected tightly enough to permit them to move with respect to each other, while retaining them in adjusted position, and the free end of the arm is provided with a socket 14 for holding an illuminating means of any suitable kind.

A pan 15 of glass or other suitable ma terial is connected with each of the sections 1 and 3 of the bar, and a similar pan 16 is connected with the joint 2, the pan 16, however, being provided with a slot or opening 17 in its bottom at the side adjacent to the bed rail. Each of the pans 15 is provided at its upper edge with an annular flange 18 which rests upon the upper edge of a ring 19, shaped to fit the exterior of the pan, and provided at one side with a depending flange 2O spaced apart from the ring, the adjacent section of the jointed bar being received between the ring and the flange, as shown in Fig. 3. Each ring is provided at one end with a longitudinally extending lug 21 whose free edge is provided with spaced parallel depending flanges 22, which engage the inner and outer faces of the end of the adjacent ring, the said end being recessed as at 23, on its upper edge, to receive the lug.

It will be evident from the description, that the entire attachment may be folded into a compass but slightly exceeding in superficial area, the size of a pan, and by nesting the pans, the attachment may be carried in an ordinary sized bag. The flanges 20 and 22 also form inverted U-shaped hangers for engaging the bar and the adjacent rings respectively.

The central ring for supporting the pan 16, is provided at each end With an internally projecting horizontal lug 24, and the said pan is of slight depth, being in fact but little more than a plate resting upon the lugs. The slot 17 is for permitting the passage of the chute of a Kelly pad or a similar drainage device.

The attachment is especially devised for an emergency outfit and when not in use, the pans are nested, the jointed bar, and the jointed arm are folded, the arm being detached from the bar, and the entire attachment is packed in a bag. When it is desired to use the same, the bar is secured to the side rail of the bed, and as the arms of the yoke are widely separated, they will receive the side rail of any bed, the jointed. arm is socured in place, and the rings and pans are connected with the bar.

Itwill be evident that the attachment may be connected with the bed in a minimum of time, and when in place, everything necessary for the operation, may be placed within easy and convenient reach of the operators hands. The sponges, instruments, etc. are

also within plain view of the operator, so that no time is lost in searching for the required article.

I claim 1. A bed attachment, comprising a sec tional fold able bar, a yoke for each end of the bar, and whose arms are adapted to straddle the bed rail and the bar, a set screw threaded through one arm, a ring for each section of the bar, each of said rings having on the side adjacent the bar a depending flange spaced apart from the side of the ring for receiving the section therebetween, the central ring having at each endinwardly and outwardly extending lugs, the last named lugs being each provided with spaced depending flanges for receiving the edge of the adjacent ring therebetween, pans seated in the end rings and having marginal flanges for engaging the upper edges thereof, and a pan in the central ring resting on the inwardly extending lugs, said p an having an opening through the bottom thereof for the purpose set forth.

2. A bed attachment comprising a jointed bar, means for detachably connecting the ends of the bar with a bed, a ring connected with each section of the bar, said rings having U-shaped hangers for engaging the sections, the central ring having at each end a longitudinal extending lug provided with spaced depending flanges for receiving the edge of the adjacent ring therebetween, and a pan supported in each ring.-

3. A bed attachment comprising a folding bar, means for connecting the ends of the bar with a bed, a plurality of rings each having an inverted. U-shaped hanger for engaging the bar, the central ring having at each end an inverted U-shaped hanger for engaging the end of the adjacent ring, and pans supported by the rings.

4. A bed attachment, comprising a folding bar, means for connecting the bar with a bed,

a plurality of rings supported by the bar, a connection between the ends of adjacent rings, and pans supported in the rings, the

- central pan having an opening through the bottom thereof for the purpose set forth.

5. A bed attachment, comprising a folding bar, means for connecting the bar with a bed, a plurality of rings supported by the bar, a connection between the ends of adjacent rings, and p ans supported in the rings.

6. A bed attachment, comprising a folding bar, means for detachably connecting the bar with a bed, a plurality of pans supported. on the bar, and a detachable connection between the ends of the pans.

7. A bed attachment, comprising a folding bar, means for detachably connecting the bar with a bed, and a plurality of pans supported on the bar.

8. In a device of the class described, a folding bar and means for connecting the ends of the bar to a bed, said means comprising a yoke adapted to straddle the bar and the bed rail, a set screw threaded through one arm of the yoke and a plurality of pans supported on the bar.

9. In a device of the class described, a bar for connection with a bed, and a pan support comprising a ring for rcceivingthe pan, and an inverted U-shapcd hanger on the ring for engaging the bar.

10. In a device of the class described, a bar for connection with a bed, and a plurality of pan supports, each consisting of a ring for receiving the pan and having a U-shaped,

hanger for engaging the bar, sundry of the rings having at their ends U-shaped hangers for engaging the adjacent rings.
