Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1921.
Application filed August 25, 1917. Serial No. 188,146.
To all w/iom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. WINDSOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palmyra in the county of Burlington and State of 2New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Basins for Lavatories, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to sanitary basins for use, preferably, in connection with the ordinary stationary wash-basin and all other lavatories of the basiny type.
Very often personsbecome infected withV diseases through the misuse of wash-basins especially in hotels, publie, places and they like, and it is the object of this invention to provide simple and effective means which will permit the use of such basin without fear of infection.
Another object of the invention is the prot an extensible supporting frame adapted to rest upon the upper edgeof the usual waslibasin,l -a collapsible basin removably "and pivotal'ly supported on theframe and having other connection with the frame for maintaining it against pivotal movement, said basin being shiftable on the frame to effect a disengaging of said other connection from the frame, whereby the basin may be swung about its pivot to facilitate the emptying of its contents into the lavatory directly beneathv it.
Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of a knockdown supporting frame and a sanitary basin consisting of a ring having secured thereto impervious fleriible` material which forms the bowl of the sanitary basin, thus permitting` the device to be folded and packed in a small space.
`Other features and advantages will appear from the following description, and the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention:
The invention consists in the provision ofY Figure l is a perspective view of the in* vention showing thesame applied to a lavatory of the usual construction.
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the lavatory, shown in Fig. l, showing the.
invention applied and its relative position with respect to the. parts of the lavatory; the dotted lines showing the basin of the invention emptying into the lavatory.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, however, showing' a slightl modification of the invenion which adapts it to another type oflava- Fig 4 is a fragmentary detail sectional view to illustrate the detailed construction of thebasin of the invention.
i Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detailed construction illustrating the construction gof the frame, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detailed construe tion of the basin of the invention.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail of means for securing the supporting elements and the basin together.
Like characters denote similar and like parts throughout the specification and drawing. Y
With particular reference to Figs. l and 2,
A denotes an extensible knockdown frame, preferably rectangular, and'consistingv of a pair o f end bars l and a pair of side bars 2. The side bars 2 each consist of two telescoping membersZ and 2, having, theirl outer ends formed with a transversely eX-' tending bore in which slidably extends the ends of the bars l. Suitable securing inembers, such as thumb screws 3, are provided for adjustably securing bars l andQ and the telescoping members 2 and 2 in their adjusted positions. A supporting frame, thus provided, is extensible and may be adjusted for use in connection with lavatories of various sizes, as the frame is to be laid upon the top of the lavatory and to be supported upon and adjacent the upper edge of its bowl.
l rfhe sanitary basin member B comprises an annular member consisting of two nested rings 4: and 5 between which is gripped and held, the edge of a flexible waterproof mate rial 6 which forms the bowl of the basin B. The outer ring 5 is provided at substantially diametrically opposite points with lugs or supporting arms 7 to rest upon two opposite side bars of frame A, when the latte-r is suitably adjusted, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The basin B is adapted to lie over and partially extend into the bowl of the lavatory and to receive water from its faucets. However, the basin B is to be of such size that its bowl portion 6 will not contact with the bowl of the lavatory for sanitary reasons. n
" To maintainthe basin Bin a fixed position relative to the frame and against pivotal movement on the arms 7, the latter are so formed as to slightlyZI suspend the basin from the frame in order that opposite'portions 8 of the basin may engage the underside ofthe other two side bars of the frame, as inV Figs. A1 and v2. This arrangement, moreoveigpermits the contents of the basin B to be readily emptied without necessitat-V ing the removal of the frame from the lavatory or the removal of the basin from the frame,y by simply shifting or sliding the basin on the bars 1 of the frame so that the end portions 8 will be free to permit the basin tot pivot about the supporting arms V7 see dotted lines Fig. 2.
The outer ring 5 of the sanitary basin has on its lower edge an inwardly extending annular flange 9. This flange acts as a stop for the inner ring 4 and prevents it from being drawn out of engagement with the ringr by the weight which may be placed upon the flexible bowl of the basinv l Furthermore, the flange serves as a gripper for maintaining the edge of the fiexible bowl 6 in engagement between the rings 4 and 5, it being noted however, that the edge 10 of the flange is rounded to relieve it of a sharp cutting edge.
, k1n Fig. 3 the basin B may be suspended from the frame A to a greater or less degree by merely adjusting the arms 7 to lengthen or shorten their vertical portions, in order that the water from the faucet will be discharged into the basin, when the invention is used with lavatories of the type wherein the faucet lies directly upon the lavatory slab, as shown, or wherein the faucet may be concealed in the lavatory. Obviously this K'Kmodification necessitates the provision of 'a differentretaining arrangement to normally maintain the basin `B against pivotal movement on its arms 7; and it may be accomplished by any suitable means, such as by an upwardly extending arm 11 secured to one of the rings 4 and 5 between the support-arms 7 and has its upper end laterally recessed as at,14, to receive one of said bars of the frame A. To obtain such an adjustment of the basin relative to the frame, as just mentioned, three perforated lugs7a are provided on theouter periphery of the outer ring 5, two of said lugs being arranged diametrically opposite each other to slidably receive portions of the arms'7 while the remaining lug adj ustably receives the retaining arm 11. Binding screws 7b are threaded inthe lugs 7a to frictionally engage and hold the arms 7 and 11 in their adjusted positions.
1t may be found convenient and advantageous to thread a thumb screw 12 in the upper end of the retaining arm 11 to bind it in engagement with the bar of said frame after a manner shown in the drawings. v1t
Vwill also be Aclear that the basin may be swung on the arms 7 to empty it, as inthe showing in Fig. 2,by unscrewing the bindingl screw 12 and shifting the basin B on the frame so that the retaining arm will disengage the latter. i
Any suitable water-proof material may be used to provide the bowl 6 of the sanitarybasin B. However, it is also contemplated to use paper bowls which may be supplied by hotels or sold'through vending propriate plug of rubber, paper, or the likeV 13 as shown in Fig. 6.
Applicant however, does not wish tolimit himself to the particular material which will form the flexible bowl 6 of the sanitary' basin, nor does he wish to limit himself to the use of the invention with the stationary wash basin of the type shown, as the invention may be susceptible to userwith various other types of lavatories or may be used, as will be manifest to those in the art, separately and independently of such lavatories.
The foregoing clearly describes the invention.V Howevenit is to be understood that sundry changes in the construction, v combination and arrangement of parts may be made that fall within legitimate scope of the appended claims.
