BUTTER-WORKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 10, 1910.
Application filed March 23, 1909. Serial No. 485,273.
T 0 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA IVELLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Workers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices used for working butter, and has especial reference to that class of butter working devices in which a wooden slab or tray is provided on which butter is pressed by means of a roller, said tray being so constructed as to permit the fluid expressed from the butter by the roller to readily escape from the tray to a suitable receptacle. 7
The invention has for an object to provide an improved device of this character by means of which butter may be conveniently and efficiently pressed and the butter-milk or fluid, expressed therefrom, caused to be discharged from the tray.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the inveu tion.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the sev eral views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
The butter worker constructed in accord ance with this invention consists of a portable slab or tray 1, usually constructed of wood, and provided on each side and one end with the cleats or rails 2 which serve to retain the butter in place. The side rails converge toward the longitudinal center of the tray at the lower end as shown at 3, to form a contracted outlet or escape opening for the fluid which is expressed from the butter.
In order that the butter milk or fluid expressed from the butter will readily flow toward the opening at the end of the tray, suitable means is provided to support the tray in an inclined or tilted position from its rear end downward to its front end, as for example the cross-bar or cleat 4 secured to the under side of the tray 1, at its rear end.
In order to aid in carrying the expressed butter milk and fluid down to the opening at the lower end of the tray the surface of the latter is transversely convex throughout its length, so as to gradually slope laterally from the center line to the sides of the tray, and at the sides of the tray its surface is preferably provided at each side with a longitudinal groove 6 which extends along adjacent to the diagonal rail 3 to the mouth of the opening 5. By this means effective removal of the butter-milk or fluid from the central part where the butter is manipulated is efiected, the liquid draining away from the butter at the sides and toward the lower end of the device. The liquid is thus removed from liability of being worked back into the butter after expression, as might be the case with the usual device having a concave working surface.
In using the device, the tray 1 resting on a table or other suitable support, butter placed in the tray is pressed by means of a roller, and the butter-milk or fluid expressed therefrom is confined by the side rails 2, and 3 and flows downwardly toward the opening 5 at the lower end of the tray being directed thereto by the converging rails 3. The butter-milk or fluid escaping through the open ing or chute at the lower end of the tray is caught in a suitable receptacle placed beneath the same.
By means of this invention a simple, inexpensive, portable butter worker is provided with which butter may be efficient] y and easily worked and the butter-milk or fluid conveniently withdrawn therefrom.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising an inclined tray having rails at opposite sides and one end, said side rails converging inwardly toward the longitudinal center of the tray at the other end thereof, the upper surface of said tray being transversely convex.
2. A device of the character described, comprising an inclined tray having rails at opposite sides and one end, said side rails converging inwardly toward the longitudinal center of the tray to provide an escape opening at the other end thereof, said tray being transversely convex and having longitudlinal grooves at opposite sides between the rai s.
3. A device of the character described,
romprising a tray, a supporting cleat arranged under one end of said tray, side rails disposed upon the tray on opposite sides and one end thereof, said side rails converging inwardly adjacent to the other end of the tray to form an escape opening, said tray being transversely convex and having grooves in its upper surface extending in parallel relation to the side rails and in close proximity thereto. 10
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
