Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
- Application filed February 20,1905. Saris-1N0. 246,592.
- fountain-brushes.
The object of my inventionris to provide form of brush in which the fluid may be de-' livered to the longitudinal central ortion of the br'ushin a sheet, which when t e fluid is turned on at full head will serve to separate the bristles and flush the surface to be washed.
In the following description reference is .had to the accompanying drawings, in
20 with. Fig. 2 is a view of the brush in cenwhich- F a re 1 is a side view of the brush, showt e handle and a hose connected theretral longitudinal section on line a: a: of Fig. 1. 3 is a view of the brush in cross-section drawn through one of the water-distributing slots on line y 'y of Fi 2. Fig. 4 is a det view of the under sur ace of the brush-block with the bristles cut away close to the brushbackand showing the fluid-distributing slots.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
1 is a tubular handle for the brush. .The
' free end'portion of the handle is inclosed by a sheath 2, of rubber or other non-heat-conducting, material, beyond which is located a valve, as indicated at3. A hose 4 is connected to the lower extremity of the handle when the brush is in use. A on 5 is mounted on the upper end of the ban e and is pro vided' with a spout [6, whereby the. water from the brush is collected by, the cup and discharged through. the spoutgfi instead of I running down the handle when the brush is in a raised position.
8 is a b dy or block of the. brush, and 9 represents the bristles. A cylinder 10 is mounted upon the block and connected therewith by a plate 11 with interposed packing 12to prevent leakage. The plate 11 1s secured to the block by, screws 13. The
BRINN, a
jects outwardly from the aperture 14 and is adapted to receive the end of the handle only. The inner side of the cylinder is provided with slots 16, which permit the passage of water or othei fluid into slot-apertures 17, leading, through the block orbody 8 of the brush. The end walls of the slot-apertures 17 separate divergentlytoward the bristles, while the side walls converge toward the bristles, Y
causing the fluid to discharge through a narrow elongated opening 18 substantially in the longitudinal face of the brush-block. The water is thus permitted to discharge into the bristles. By
cylinder 10 is provided with an inletaperf ture 14, and a screw-threaded ferrule procenter line of the under sur- 1 i o ening the valve at 3 to its full capacity a s eet of water will be discharged which will separate thebr-istles and eflectivel flush the surface to be washed, whether t e bristles 'are in contact with such surface or not. By partially closing the valve at 3 the sheets of water esca in through the openings 18 are broken up y 51c bristles, and the water thus becomes distributed throughout the brush.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I I In a brush of the described class, the combination of a brush-block provided with an aperture on each side of the center, extending through the brush in a plane cutt' brush substantially along its longitu inal central line each of said apertures having side walls converging, and end walls diverging, in the direction of the bristles, and arra ed to dischar e a sheet of water between the ristles in a irection substantially par: allel thereto, whereby the bristles may be separated throu hout the length of the brush by aforcible disc arge of water; together with the I a water-supply connection communicatlng with said apertures, and a valve for regulati the flow of water therethrough.
n testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. FRANK L. BRINN.
