Description
D. N. CORNWELL.
WATER PIPE CLEANER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 30 ms.
Patented Aug. 28, 1917.
:JJNCORNWELL DANIEL N. CORNWELL, OF ANTIGO, WISCONSIN.
WATER-PIPE CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. as, 1917.
Application filed September 30, 1916. Serial No. 123,116.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL N. CORNWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Antigo, in the county of Langlade and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Pipe Cleaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in water pipe cleaners and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character adapted to be coupled to a water pipe and provided with a plunger adapted to be forced against the water pressure within the pipe whereby an effective flush or cleansing of the pipe is had.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved pipe cleaner whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a water pipe cleaner constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, P denotes a pipe wherein the water flowing therethrough is under main or other pressure and U denotes a union interposed in said pipe.
My improved attachment includes a cylinder C adapted to be engaged with said union U and has disposed therein a plunger 1 afiixed to an end of the rod 2 which rod extends outwardly of the cylinder C through an end thereof. The end portion of the cylinder C through which the rod 2 passes is provided with the packing 3 for a purpose which is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains.
When my improved device is coupled or connected to the pipe P with the water passing therethrough under pressure, the outer end of the rod 2 is struck by a hammer or other implement to force the plunger 1 in a direction toward the pipe P, and as the force of the blow imposed upon the rod 2 is in excess of the water pressure within the pipe P, the water in the pipe P is forced backward bodily which results in placing the dirt within the pipe in suspension so that when the water is drawn off through the cock 4 in communication with the cylinder C, the dirt within the pipe P may be readily drawn off. In actual practice I have found that with my improved device not only can the dirt Within the pipe P be removed but the major portion of any rust or scales which may have formed therein.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a pipe cleaner constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof. and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a'cylinder adapted to be placed in communication with a pipe, a plunger within the cylinder, and a rod to which the plunger is connected and extending exteriorly of the cylinder through an end thereof and exposed to a blow to force back bodily the water within the pipe.
2. A device of the character described comprising a cylinder adapted to be placed in communication with a pipe, a plunger within the cylinder, a rod to which the plunger is connected and extending exteriorly' of the cylinder through an end thereof and exposed to a blow to forceback bodily the water within the pipe, and a cock in communication with said cylinder.
.3. A device of the character described comprising a cylinder adapted to be placed in communication with a pipe, a plunger within the cylinder, a rod to Which the plum gel is connected and extending exteriorly of the cylinder through an end thereof and exposed to a blow to force back bodily the Water Within the pipe, and packing interposed at the end portion of the cylinder through which the rod passes.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL N. CORNWELL.
Witnesses:
KATHRYN Loos, F. J. FINNOANE.
