Description
G. C. WILDER.
Metal Punch.
Patented Nov. 10, 1868.
Inventor. v j fl/Jadux W wnesses:
N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER WASHMGTOH D C rea GEORGE' C. WILDER, OF LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
Letters Patent No. 84,039, dated November 10, 1868. I
INIPROVEMENT IN PUNCHES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and'maldng part of the same.
To all whom it may 007l-06l?l-:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. WILDER, of Lawrence, in the county ofDouglas, and State of Kansas,
have invented new and Improved Punches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying'drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of constructing punches, for the punching of nuts and washers, whereby the washers or nuts are more rapidly and economically made. 1
It consists of a follower, iorcednpwards against the washer or nut, after the same has been-formed, by the force of a spring, whereby the washer or nrrt is freed from the punch.
It consists also of a central stationary punch, over which the movable outer punch works, whereby a centre hole is punched in the nut or washer, at the same P rts A is the frame.
B is the outer or movable punch.
G is the central or fixed punch.
D is the follower.
E is the spring.
G is the support for the punch G.
a is a hole in the punch B, to receive and carry off the metal punched out by the punch C.
H is the die.
The frame A is made of iron, or other suitable material, supported by suitable legs, in the form as shown in the drawing, or in any other suitable form, so as to be of suflicicnt strength for the punching of nuts or washers upon the same, and is provided, through the neck of the same, with a rnovablepunch, B, held up by the force of a spring, or otherwise, in the ordinary way, and has, under the same, let into the frame A, a steel-tempered die, H, also in the ordinary way.
The die H is provided with a shoulder, to prevent the same from being forced through the frame A, and is provided in the centre with a hole, exactly under the punch B, saidhole being of the same shape, and nearly the samesize, as the face of the punch B.
Under the frame A, at any convenient distance therefrom, and supported by suitable attachments to the frame A, is a supplementary frame orsupport, G.
as shown in the drawing. I
Upon the support (3-,and rigidly secured thereto in a vertical position, is a tired or stationary punch, 0, said punch 0 being so finished at the upper end or face of the same as to punch a round hole inthe washer or nut, and correspond exactly with a hole, a, in the punch B, and extend upwards so asto be at the face of the same at the same height as'the top of'the die H.
The hole a, in the punch B,',cxtends upwards and outwards, so as to form a passage for the metal punched from the nut or, washer by the punchyO.
\Vithin the holein the die H, and so as to move; freely within the same, and so also as to move freely upon the punch O, a hole being bored through the centre of the same to receive the punch O, is a follower;
D. The follower D ismadeof steel, properly tempered, and is provided upon the under side with a shoulder, to prevent the top or face of said follower D from being forced upwards above the height of the top of the die H.
Upon the frame G is a bent spring, E, resting by the ends of the same upon the frame G, and extending upwards so as to support the follower D, and so as,
when the follower D is forced down by the punch B, s the follower D, will he forced upwards to the place 'of same by the force of the spring E, a hole being made in the contract the spring E to receive the punch 0 through the same, andso that said spring may move up and down, partly over the punch O.
The punches B and C are made of steel, properly tempered in the ordinary way, and may be any form,
so asto make the washers or nuts, or the hole in the I same,of any required form.
Tire operation is similar to that of other punches in common use, and is readilyseen from the drawing and the above description, the follower D freeing the washer or nut from the punch G. The same may be easily pushed from the frame A by the iron bar in the hand of the operator.
Constructed as above described, it constitutes a. convenient punch for'punchingnuts or washers from metallic bars or plates, whereby the same are more rapidly and economically punched.
The combination of punches ,B and 0, die H, and follower D, I do not claim, for it is substantially the same as that described in the withdrawn application of Lormer & Siess, in 1854; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Oombining, with saidcombination, the spring E, as
and for the purpdse described.
GEORGE '0. WILDER. Witnesses:
N. T.- STRONG, JOHN K. RANKIN.
