Description

tant' www i- G*- BENJAMIN HOBBS, OF5 NEWBURG, OHIO.
Lette/rs Pate/nt No. 86,302, dated January 26, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MANUFACTURING IRON NUTS.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent. and making part of the Inmo.
To all whom fit may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HoBBs, of Newburg, in the county of Cuyahoga, and inthe State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cold Nut-Press; and do hereby declare that the fol# lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referencemarked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a cold nut-press,
and in order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I Will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to th'e annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a front elevation, and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section.
A represents the frame of the machine, in the upper part of which is a shaft, B, which is turned by means of a wheel, C, attached to its rear end, said wheel being, by means of a belt or otherwise, connected with the engine.
The shaft B is, at its front end, provided with a circular projection or collar, D, to the front end of which a pin, E, is secured, said pin extending a suitable distance beyond the end of the shaft B, and is, at its outer or front end, provided with a circular end-piece, F, ci' exactly the same proportions or dimensions the collar D.
Around the pin E is placed a carriage, G, which moves on rollers a d in a-box, H, said box being enclosed in the frame A. It will be seen that when the shaft B is revolved, by the motion of the carriage G, the box H obtains an up-and-dowu motion.
To the centre of the under side of the box H is secured the plunger I, which Works in the bracket J, said bracket being rmly secured to the ame A, as shown.
In the plunger' I are placed hollow cutters, b b, which proj ect below the under side of the plunger.
At a suitable point under the plunger is placed the die-cup K, which contains the. centre-chuck L, and is surrounded by an open band, M.
Through the centre-chuck, L, the nucwashers c c pass, the steel die-plate d being so placed in the dieoup that the nut-washers pass through the same.
These nut-washers rest on the Washer-yoke e, which is supported by the pushers f f, and operated by means of the stirrup g and bridles h h, which latter pass up through 'the box H, and are regulated on the upper side thereof by nuts t' t'.
Through the centre of the nut-washers, c c, are placed the core-punches ll, which are stationary in the die-cup, and their upper end is level with the dieplate.
On the circular end-pieee F is placed a crab, N, which, as the machine is in operation, moves the levers m on, and these levers, in their turn, operate on the lever O, which is pivoted at the lower end of the frame A, and held in position by springs n n, :is shown in the drawings. v
To the lever O is pivoted a gauge, P, which Works on top of the die-plate, inside ofthe gauge-stop p.
The press is fed from the right side, and the crab N must be so placed as to allow the levers m, fm to force thegauge P out as the plunger commences to press on the bar.A After the nut is pressed, the gauge P-will return to the right of the gauge-stop p. In the mean time the upward movement will force the nut off the die-plate and core-punches, as the nut-washers c c are raised by means of the bridlesfh h, stirrup g, and pushers ff, to the level of the die-plate.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement ofthe shaft B, pin E, carriage G, rollers a a, and box H with the plunger I, all coustructed and operating substantially as shown and described. l
2. In combination with the above, the circular endpiece vF, crab N, and levers fm fm, operating the'gaug P, substantially as shown and described.
3. In combination with the carriage G and box H, the plunger I, guided by the bracket J, and provided with hollow cutters b b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4.. In combination with subject-matter of rst and second clauses, the die-plate d, core-punches l Z, and nut-Washers c c, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 4th day of November, 1868.
