IMPROVEMENT m CARRIAGE-CLIPS."
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and-making part of the same.
To all whom it hwy concern Be it known that I, F. B. Mouse, of Plantsville, in the county, of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Spring-Bar Clip for Carriages; and'I do herebydeclare'the following, when .taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of thisispecification, and represent in- Figure 1, an edge view;
Figure 2, a side view of the clip complete as an article of manufacture;
Figure 3, a section on line a; a;
Figure 4, a section on line 3 y,-
Figure 5, the blank preparatory to the formation of the clip; and, in
Figure 6, a top view .as it comes from the dies.
This invention relates to an improvement in springbar clips for carriages, that is to say, clips which are used to secure the spring of the carriage to the springbar.
Heretofore these articles have been formed by upsetting the metal from either end.
The objectof myinvention is to facilitate the manufacture of these clips by forming them so that they may be struck up in a single die. To this end,-
- The invention consists in forming the clip from a round rod, the diameter of the rod being that required for the screw or bolt-ends, and of 'a length the same as the length of the clip when complete from end 10 end; then in dies suitably formed, so that when the said round rod is heated and placed therein it is struck into form, flat upon its under side, and moulded upon its upper side, the widest at the centre, and tapering toward the base of the screw or bolt-ends, and the same quantity of metal at all points from end to end. To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to, describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A, in fig. 5, is the blank, being a round rod of the diameter required for the bolt-ends B B, when com.- plete. This rod is heated to the required heat, then placed in dies formed for the purpose, and struck into shape,
as seen in fig. 6, the two ends preserving their original shape for the bolts, and between the two bolts B B the metal is spread and moulded, as seen in figs. 3 and 4, being thinner and broader at the centre, narrowing toward 'each end, yet retaining the same amount of metal from end to end.
Thus the olip, while it is strengthened laterally at the base of the bolt where such strength is required,-
and brought into ornamental shape, is not upset, that part of the process being saved and a better and more ornamental clip produced at a single operation than has heretofore been done by a combination of several operations.
The clip, as an article of manufacture, is not threaded at the bolt-ends, this being left for the consumer.
Having fully described my invention,
What I.claim' as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Carriage-clips, as an article of manufacture, constructed and formed substantially as herein described.
F. B. MORSE.
