To all whom it may concern.-

Byron, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Rest and Handle for Buckets and other Re ceptacles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others, skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bucket having the device applied thereto and showing the rest in operative position in full lines and in lowered position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a bucket havap lied to each side thereof and. showin in fulidines the rest in operative position to orm supports for the bucket and in dotted lines the position of the rest when forming handles. Fig. 3 is a side view of the device applied to a bucket, showing the position of the rest when used as a handle. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the attaching member of the device removed from the bucket; and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a modified form of rest or handle.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes an attaching device ada ted to be engaged with the upper edges 0 the The device 1 is preferably formed from a single piece of wire of suitable size and length, said wire being bent to form a centrally-disposed stop-bar 2, at each end of which the wire is bent to form open coils or eyes 3, from which the ends of I the wire are bent upwardly a suitable distance, as shown at 4, thence downwardly to form clamping-fingers 5. The fingers 5 are adapted to be engaged with the inner side of the bucket or receptacle, which is firmly clenched or clamped between said fingers and the upwardly-bent portion 4 of the wire, thereby securely holding the attaching device in place on the edge of the bucket.

Adapted to be engaged with the attaching device 1 is a combined rest and handle 6, said rest and handle being shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the drawings as formed from a single piece of wire of suitable size bentinto substantially rectangular shape. The ends of the wire on one side of the rectangularshaped rest are bent outwardly and then inwardly to form hooks 7, which are adapted to be detachably engaged with the eyes 3 either above or below the stop-bar 2.

When the rest and handle 6 is connected to the eyes 3 below the bar 2 and arranged in a horizontal position, the hooks 7 on the ends of the wire will engage the under side of the stop-bar, thereby limiting the upward movement of the combined rest and handle, so that the same willbe held at substantially a horizontal position, in which position the same is adapted to engage the knees of the person using the bucket, thereby forming rests to support the bucket between the knees in a convenient position for milking purposes.

When the hooks 7 are engaged with the eyes 3 above the stop-bar 2, the combined handle and rest may be swung upwardly to a substantially vertical position, thereby serv ing as handles by means of which the bucket or other receptacle may be conveniently carried. When the combined rest and handle is attached to the eyes above the stop-bar 2, said handle will be prevented from dropping down upon the side of the bucket by the engagement of the hooks with the up er side of the stop-bar, as will be understood? In Fig. 5 of the drawings is shown a slightly-modified form of combined handle and rest. In this instance a rest 8 is shown, said rest being substantially bail or loop shaped and haying its ends bent outwardly and slightly upwardly to form hooks 9, which are adapted to be engaged with the eyes 3 of the fastening device. The combined rest and handle 8 may be connected to the eyes in the same positions as shown and described in connection with the first figures of the drawings, said handle or rest, however, being rest and means to detachably connect the other receptacle the be conveniently carried or supsame to a bucket or latter may ported when in use for milking or other purposes, said handle and rest being quickly detached and connected to change its position.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in. the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any'of the advantagesof this invention as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a combined rest and handle having on its ends attaching-hooks, of an attaching device having eyes with which said hooks are adapted to be engaged, and a stop-bar to hold the combined rest and handle in an operative position when used as a support and to limit the downward movement of the same when used as a handle, substant'ially as described. In a device of the character described. the combination with a combined rest and handle constructed of a single piece of wire, the ends of which are bent to form attachinghooks, of an attaching device adapted to be secured to the edge of a receptacle, said attaching device being constructed of a single piece of wire bent to form clamping-fingers, whereby the same is attached to said receptacle, coils bent in said wire to form eyes to receive said attaching-hooks, and a centrallylimit the up or down movement of said rest and handle when the latter is used as a support or handle, substantially as described.
