Description
PATENTED JAN. 1,-1907.

. SAD IRON HANDLE.
APPLICATION FILED OUT-1G. 1905.-
Vi/imaoow UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' JAMES R. GOGHRAN, OF S1LVERS TAR, MONTANA.
' SAD-IRON HANDLI E.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1, 190'7.
Application filed October 16, 1905. Serial No- 282.997.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES R. OocHRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Silverstar, in the county of Madison and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Iron Handles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in l handles, and more particularly to detachable handles for use on sad-irons and the like.
One object of the invention is to provide a handle of this character which will be of simple, strong, and durable construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of the invention is to provide a handle with a hand-grip shaped to fit the hand, so that continued use of it will not cramp or blister the hand.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
.' In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my im roved sad-iron handle. Fig. 2 is a bottom p an view. Fig.
3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view,
and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the handgnp removed from the handle-frame.
Referring to the drawings (by numeral, 1
denotes my improved handle adapted to .be
detachably connected to a sad-iron or any similar object and consisting of a handleframe 2, a hand-grip 3, and a spring-catch 4.
The frame 2 is formed of a sin le piece of sheet-steel or other suitable meta by cutting and bending the same, as shown. This frame consists of a straight portion 6, havingits ends 7 bent upwardly and inwardly and apertured to receive screws or similar fastenlngs 8; which enter the ends of the hand-grip 3. The handle frame 2 is adapted to beat- V tached to a sad-iron by means of a hook 9,
' -Which is formed integral with the frame by stamping it from the central portion 6 of the frame, as clearl .shown in'Fig. 3 of the drawings. The hoo 9 is held in engagement with the usual'keeper upon the sad-iron by means of a spring-catch 4. The latter is made of a single piece of resilient metal which has one of its ends reduced, as at 10, and secured by a rivet 11 at one end of the portion 6 of the handle-frame and its other end bent at right angles, as at 12, and then upwardly, as at 13. The portion 12 of the catch coacts with the hook 9 to secure the handle on the iron and projects through and is guided in a transverse slot 14, formed in the portion 6 of the handle-frame, as 'clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The end 13 of the catch is curved and projects upwardly through a longitudinal slot 15, formed adjacent to the slot 14. To permit the catch to be readily elevated to release the hook 9, I provide a knob or finger-piece 16, which, as shown, is secured,
'by means of a rivet 17, upon the top of the catch.
The hand-grip 3, which may be of wood or any other suitable material, is shaped to fit the hand when the latter isin-its closed position. It consists of a body having upon one. side a comparatively deep recess or depression 18 to receive the thumb and upon its other side and its bottom a series of recesses or grooves 19, shaped to receive the four fin- I gers. By making the hand-grip in this form no part of the .hand'when grasping it Wlll be 'in a cramped or unnatural position, and as a Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, i s- A sad-iron handle comprising a metallic plate having an intermediate portion and upturned end portions, said intermediate portion having an o ening, a transverse slot near the inner end 0 'said opening and having a downturned integral hook near said slot and on the side thereof opposite'said 0 emng, a handp connecting the upturne ends of said p ate, and a spring-plate on the intermediate portion'of the first-mentioned plate my hand in presence of two subscribing withaving one end secured thereto and having I nesses.
its opposite end bent downwardly through JAMFS R OOCHRAN the slot and curved upwardly and outwardly l J 5 through said opening, substantially as doi \Nitnesses:
scribed. i WILLIAM H. THOMPSON,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set i B. FRANK PHILLIP.
