Be itflknown that L-FRANK A. HOLT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ilolyoke,inthe county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Utensil, of which the following is a specifica-.

tion.

Ihis invention relates to an improved combination implement or utensil for household use, the object being to provide a device of simple construction having parts or features each serving to fulfil its own special func-1 tion and in connection with other parts contributing to the fulfilment of other functions,

all to theend of providing in the combination implement, which is comparatively simple and inexpensive, means and appliances for a great variety of uses in the kitchen or household.

1, to constitute the hook 1 1 to be utilized in lifting bails of kettles and the like.

The extremity a of the handle A has pivotally supported at its end portion the member g, which comprises the paired ear-lugs 15 15, through which the pivot 16 unites it for its rocking or conforming movement on the handle extremity a and also comprises the laterally-widened body 17, the forward face of which is of arc contour to correspond to the surface of a dish or pan, and provided with the groove 18, ranging between the edges along said face for the reception of the bead or edge enlargement or edge flange common in pans either round or rectangular. The lug or jaw extension f of I the portion a has its inner edge arranged to cross the arc-formed face of the self-adj usting member 9 and close toward or against the same midway between the ends of said member, as manifest from the drawings.

One of the handle portions is provided with an integrally-formed stud 19, while the otherhas at its end the lug 20, provided with a perforation in which is engaged the ring or stirrup shaped piece 22, which may be of wire, all tothe end of providing a detachable engagement or catch device for holding, when desired,'the parts A A closely together, as is most advantageous at times when the implement is to be made available for some of I its uses, such as tack driving or pulling, stove-cover lifting,.or the lifting of a kettle from a stove by its bail.

A spring h of comparatively slight reaction is applied between the handle members A A serving, when the engagement or catch device provided at the ends is released, to spread said members and open the jaws without the necessity of any opening manipulation, it being understood that both the handle members are within the grasp of the one hand, and the jaw members may be brought together into closing or gripping relations by a contraction of the handle members, easily accomplished by the one hand.

The catch device, consisting of the formations and appliances 19 2O 22, may be substituted by some other catch device for the same purpose, if desired, or a catch device may be altogether omitted; but its provision is desirable and does not add materially to the expense.

It is perceived that the member f at the forward extremity of the one handle A, which member has the hooked extremity 14, is comparativcly long or deep and that the oscillating block 9 opposite said member f is also quite a distance removed from the throat of the jaws. This is designed so that when it is desired to heat the contents of a pan or like receptacle in a cylinder-stove where the fire is considerably below the door the same may be conveniently done in the manner indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In this figure a pan is shown having a beaded edge or border-flange at, the same being understood as being a circular pan. Now it is apparent that whether this pan has vertical walls or flaring walls the oscillating block becomes self-conforming to the vertical contour, while the concavity in the front face thereof gives a sufiiciently broad hearing, so that when the edge portion of the pan is held by the nipping action of the said partsfand 9 it is held with a suflicient bearing and engagement by the block g upon and against its outer face, so as to prevent its tilting or upsetting. Although the block g is shown as having a concave face, this same member is, in conjunction with the member f, as well adapted to lift rectangular baking-pans into and out from ovens as circular pans, as obvious.

The depth of the recess between the earlugs 15 15 of the block g in connection with the relative dimension of the end of the member a beyond the pivot 16 regulates or limits the extent of rocking movement which the said block g may have, such oscillation being ample to permit the said block,in conjunction with the closing-up movement of the member f, to conform to efliciently grip upon the mar ginal portions of pans or other utensils having varying flares or contours.

\Vhile in Fig. 1 the implement is shown as used in liftinga kettle by its bail, which may be done whether the jaws are open or closed, and in Fig. 2 it is shown how the member a on which the hooked extensionf is supported may be utilized as a stove-cover lifter, and while in Fig. 3 it is illustrated how the device may be employed for placing in or removing from the fire-pot of a stove a pan or other like utensil, the combination utensil may be employed for other purposes beyond those illustrated or enumerated.

I claim 1. A combination household implement comprising a suitable handle, a jaw extension provided with the elongated member f and a second relatively movable jaw provided with the oscillating-block g, pivoted thereon, and having its transversely-elongated forward face of are form and provided between its upper and lower edges with the groove 18, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A combination household implement, comprising a suitable handle having a jaw extremity a formed with the step 10, and the wedge-shaped extension 12 bifurcated at its end, and having the integral downwardly-extended elongated lug f, the extremity of which is in the form of a hook, and the relatively movable jaw member a adapted for opening and closing movements relative to said elongated lug f, and provided thereon'with the block 9 having the arc-formed forward face with the groove 18 therein, and having the ear- lugs 15, 15 through which, and said member a the pivot 16 is passed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a household combination implement, the combination with the lever-handle, A, provided with extremity a comprising step 10 and the wedge-shaped and bifurcated extension 12 having the downwardly-extended elongated lugfat the rear of said wedge extension, which lug terminates in the forwardlyextended hook member 14, combined with the lever-handle A pivoted to said handle A and having the angular extension member a extended along adjacent said lug f, and provided with the block g pivoted thereon, said block having the arc-formed forward face with the groove 18 therein, and a spring exerting an opening pressure between said lever-handles, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4:.
