UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED OOPLEY, OF SHEFFIELD, COUNTY OF YORK, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HERMANN BOKER & CO., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FORK -GUARD.
srnorrrcmroiv forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,359, dated October 22, 1889.
Application filed June 21, 1889. Serial No. 315,057- (No model.) Patented in England September 27, 1884, No. 12,865.
To aZZ whom it Hwy concern;
Be it known that I, ALFRED OorLEY, of Sheffield, in the county of York and Kingdom of England, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carving-Forks, (for which a patent has been granted to me heretofore in Great Britain, No. 12,865, dated September 27, 1884,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a carving-fork in which the g;;ard is pivoted in the shank of the fork proper and retained in opened or closed position by means of a spring.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction of a fork of this character.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of this improved carving-fork. Fig.'2 represents the underside of this improved carving-fork provided with a rest which is connected with the guard. Fig.
3 represents the shank of the fork and the spring for the guard set in a recess in said shank, also said spring detached. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of this improved fork, in which the guard and rest are in one piece. Fig. 5 represents the guard detached in side and rear elevations.
The shank B of this improved carving-fork is provided with a slot, which extends through said shank from the upper to the under side thereof. The guard A is provided with a heel or, having two flat sides a b. This heel extends into the slot of the shank and is pivoted to said shank. When in open position, the heel projects entirely through the slot and beyond the lower face of the shank. A platespring C is riveted at its front end to the under side of the shank near the lower end thereof, and extends backward over the shank, covering the slot therein. When the guard opens, the projecting heel forces the spring outward from the shank, and the tension of the spring holds the guard in open position.
The fork-rest D may be constructed integral with the guard A, said fork-rest straddling the shank.
just above the fork-rest.
I claim I 1. A carving-fork comprising aforkproper, a shank, and ahandle attached to the shank, said shank having a slot extending therethrough from the upper to the lower edge thereof, a guard provided with a heel pivoted to said shank within said slot, said heel extending through the slot and projecting beyond the lower face of the shank, and a plate-spring attached at its front end to the under side of said shank and extending backward, covering said slot, its rear end resting in contact with the projecting heel of the guard, substantially as described. a
2. A carving-fork comprising a fork proper, a shank, and a handle attached to the shank, said shank having a slot extending therethrough from the upper to the lower edge thereof, a guard provided with a heel pivoted to said shank within said slot, "said heel extending through the slot and projecting beyond the lower face of the shank, and a platespring attached at its front end to the under side of said shank and extending backward, covering said slot, its rear end resting in contact with the projecting heel of the guard, and a fork-rest integral with said guard and straddling said shank, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have'signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALFRED COPLEY. Witnesses:
RoBT. F. DRURY, \ENSOR D. DRURY.
In this case the heel of the guard is attached to the under side thereof,
