SAD-IRON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1911.
Application filed. November 30, 1910. Serial No. 594,875
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J OWSKY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to laundry and particularly to sad irons.
An object of this invention is to produce a sad iron having a novel detachably connected handle with means for confining the handle and preventing movement thereof with respect to the body of the iron, means being also provided for fastening the handle against detachment except upon the manipulation of the retaining latch.
A further object of this invention is to produce a sad iron having a body and a detachably connected handle, said detachable handle being readily applied to and removed from the body of the iron and the said handle being further provided with a tongue to engage a lug of the iron and a latch on the handle for retaining the handle and the parts thereof in assembled relation to the body.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote correspond ing parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of an iron embodying the invention, the same being partly in section; Fig. 2 illustrates a perspective View of the body of the iron; Fig. 3 illustrates a detail view of the handle partly in section; and Fig. 4 illustrates a perspective view of a portion of the handle.
In these drawings 5 denotes the body of the iron having a marginal shoulder 6 standing from a point near the rear at each side and extending around the front of the said body. The body is further provided with a recess 7 in its top surface extending longitudinally thereof and under the portion 8, forming a seat, the said portion 8 being further provided with an aperture 9 for a purpose to be presently explained.
The body is provided with a detachable handle comprising a base 10 which is adapted to fit against the marginal shoulder 6 of the body and is preferablyof a thickness equal to the height of said shoulder. The base 10 is further provided with an elongated opening 11 in which a latch 12 is pivoted through the medium of the pin 13, the said latch being engaged by a spring 14.- for the purpose of holding it normally in horizontal position or parallel with the base 10. The latch has a nose 15 which extends through the aperture 9 and a knob or handle 16 by which the latch is manipulated. The base 10 is further provided with a tongue 17 preferably formed integral with the base and extending parallel therewith a suitable distance therefrom, the said tongue having its end provided with a cam surface 18 designed to engage the cam surface 19 of the body of the iron, the said cam surface 19 serving to draw the base of the handle closer against the body of the iron prior to the time the nose 15 of the latch is inserted in the aperture 9 of the body. The tongue 17 is also provided with an aperture 19 forming a seat for the nose 15 of the latch, so that after the tongue has been applied to the body, the latch is depressed so that its nose extends through the aperture 9 of the body into the seat of the tongue, thereby preventing movement of the base of the handle longitudinally of the body of the iron so long as the said latch is in its operative position.
The base has the handle 20 thereon which handle is secured to the base in any appropriate manner and here shown as confining one end of the spring 14 which spring lies between the base and the end of the handle and secured thereto by means of a screw 21. The top of the base 10 is provided with recesses 22 to receive a pin 23 carried by the latch for the purpose of limiting the clownward movement of the latch.
I claim In a sad iron, a body having a longitudinal recess in its upper side, the end of the said recess having a cam surface and the body having an aperture extending into the recess, a marginal shoulder on the body, a handle having a base fitting against the margin-a1 shoulder of the body and having a clamped between the handle and the base 10 tongue with a cam end to engage the cam and havlng 1ts opposlte end 1n engagement surface of the Wall of the recess, the sand W1th the latch.
tongue having an aperture therein adapted In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature to aline with the aperture of the body, a in the presence of tWO Witnesses.
latch pivoted to the base and having a nose JAMES JOWVSKY. extending through the aperture of the base Htnesses:
and into the aperture of the tongue, a handle 7 a J. B. Winwnn,
for the base, a spring having one end JOHN M. JOWSKY.
