@gaten JAMES L. JOHNSON AND J. WILSON FOUST, OF EVANSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 83,970, dated November l0, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-SPINNING- MACHINE.
The Schedule referred. to-in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that We, J AMES L. JOHNSON'al'id J. WIL- SON FOUST, of' Evansburg, in the county of Orawibrd, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spinning-Frames; and We do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof, which'will enable those skilled iu the art to make and use the same, reference being vhad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication. y
Our invention relates to improvements in spinningframes, the object of which is to provide a simple and effective apparatus for the purpose.
It consists in an arrangement of apparatus for preserving the proper tension on the driving-belt, as will be hereinafter more fullydescribed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown a side elevation of a spinning-frame, with our improvement applied, the front rail being removed.
A represents the frame of the machine;
B, the driving-Wheel, which communicates motion to the multiplying-wheel O, supported in a swinging frame, having its axis at C.
E represents a belt working over the pulleys C and D, and communicating motion to the spindle F, which is supported in posts rising up from the carriage G.
H represents a contracting and expanding-frame, com
posed oi' two series of toggle-arms, joined together by toggle-j oints, the two series being pivoted together, and operated by a swinging lever, I, which derives its m0- tion from a foot-treadle, K, arranged upon a platform suspended from the framey of the machine.
The support of the pulley D is connected adjustably to the frame, whereby it may be moved to tighteuthe belt E.
The support ofthe pulley C is also arranged upon an axis, and provided with a ratchet-Wheel, a, and pawl b, for the same purpose. I,
The said frame H is connected at one endfto the frame ofthe machine, and atthe other to the spindlecarriage, andrbeing operated by the treadle, as aforesaid, thereby communicates to the spindle-frame Grthc necessary reciprocating motion.
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of pulley C, having avibratin g support, the ratchet a, pawl b, and the pulley D, having an
