Description
tnitrd Statut @wat @titula JAMES MCINTIRE, OF HOPEWELL COTTON-WORKS, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 W. C. DIGKEY Letters .Patent No. 99,099, dated January 25, 18705 antedatcd January 14, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORD-MAKING- MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent aud making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MoINTmE, of Hopewell Cotton-Works, in the county of Chester, and State of Pennsylvania., have invented a new and improved Twister for Twine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part 4of this specification, in which--- Figure 1 is a side view. Figure 2 is a horizontal section, through line x a: of iig 1 McIntire, June 22, 1869; and consists in a simple and convenient substitute for the standards and leathe belt around the lower ends of said spindles.
In the drawings- B B B represent the bobbins;
b b b, their spindles;
i c c c, the wheels or circular disksnear the lowerend of the spindles, and which, by friction against the suritself being supported upon a plate, G, to which it is 1 connected by standards g g and v I 'I, the jointed arms which support the upper ends of the bobbin-spindles.
All these parts are similar in construction and operation to corresponding parts in the apparatus patented June 22, 1869, above referred to, and constitute no part of my present invention', which consists in certain improvements to be used in connection with these parts, which I will now more particularly describe. A
Inpractical operation, it is found that unless ,the arms l I are held down, they will occasionally work up while the machine is running, and become disen- ;1h.is invention relates tothe device patented by J.
gaged from the bobbin-spindles, throwing the-whole apparatus out of working-order. To remedy this, a collar, m, is provided, having four or more arms, n n, which slips down upon the shaft D, until it rests on the fixed collar, to which the arms I I are pivoted, in which position its armsn n extend beyond the joints t', and rest upon the upperside of the arms I I, coinciding exactly in number-and position with said arms. This collar is fixed to the shaft D, by means of a setscrew, s, as shown in the drawings, when it holds the arms I I securely down upon the bobbin-spindles, and prevents all inconvenience 'arising from the cause above referred to.
Instead of the leather belt, secured by standards, as .described and shown in my former'patent, I now employ an annular plate or ring, composed of sever-alindepeudent curved segments, r 1', each segment supported by two (more or less) spring-standards, la u.
The standards are'each provided with a slotted foot or base-ange, o, upon which they rest on plate G, and with a set-screw, c, operating in the slot, by means of which they can severally be adjusted in or out on said plate, so as to increase or decrease the friction between the ring fr fr and the disks c c, and thus pel'- fectly'regulate the action of said parts.
This device is found to be more simple, convenient,
and effective in practical operation than anything, for
a similar purpose, heretofore brought into use.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
T'he curved segments 1' r, when supported upon flexible elastic standards u u, and provided with an adjusting-apparatus, o c, and arranged in connection with the disks c c c, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
JAMES MCIN TIRE.
