Letters Patent No. 114,589, dated May l), 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHOPPING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lam..
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL NEWCOMER, of Columbia., in the county of Lancaster and State of Penn Sylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Chopping-Machines, ot' which the following is a'specification.
The first part of my invention relates to the combined lever-and-pawl arrangement to turn-a series of' springs out of the way, as well as to regulate the power of their action on thev choppers, the construction of elbowed chopper-supports with their cushioned springsnpports and socket ends, and binding or adjustingscrews, together with the belt-tigbtener, and the manner of revolving the block in the arrangement of the several parts, of otherwise common machines for mincing meat.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the several parts, in which--l Figurel is a side elevation.
Figure 2, a rear elevation to show the elbowed ends of the, chopper-holders, side wheels, springs elevated with the lever and pawl.
Figure 3 illustrates one of' the four chopper-holders with the stern and chopper down.
Figure 4 illustrates the saine when elevated and sustained by the cross-rod U.
-A A are two vertical posts, between which the choppers, springs, and lifting-drum'have their bearings.
B is the raised bed or bottom of the machine.
C is an ordinary revolving block.-
D a tin or metallic case or ring fitted on the block B. Between the two there is a groove or flange for a belt, cord, orits equivalent, marked E.
F I1", are two driving-wheels,- like balance-wheels, one on each side, with a handle, f, on the shaft that supports the drum H with its litters h.
-Gr is a belt-pulley between wheel F and frame A.
It is a belt-tightener, and made adjustable by a setscrew, r. The bearings for the drum-shaft are between uprights A and W, with a follower or box to secure it.
The choppers O have a square stein, N, passing through a socket end of the support, in which the same is held and made adjustable by a set-screw, n..
This supporting-head K is horizontal, with an inclined or elbow terminus, J, rounded and thickened at the bend and perforated for a fulcrum-rod, which sustains four such chopper-holders, as shown by Iig. 2.
This fulerum-rod has' a head at one end and a screw for a nut on the other; so also tbe rod that holds the spring bar T.
This spring bar has four dat springs, S, secured with screwbolts, for replacing in case of any one breaking.
These springs rest on gum-elastic pads m on a raised lug, M, near the socket end of, the support K.
To operate the spring bar T with the springs S a rack, Q, is attached to the upright A, into which a pawl, I?, catches.
This pawl is connected with a lever, L, for turning the spring bar; said pawl is provided with aspring.
Ther-eis also a rod, U, across the machine to provide a means for lockingthe ends J when the choppers are to be removed -i'rom the block; when turned up, as shown by tig. 4, the rod Uis passed behind the lower ends of J and laid in the hooks on the inner sides of the uprights A A', which thus hold them up securely.
The operation has no special novelty, as revolving blocks surmonnted with metallic rims, and choppers actuated by litters and aided by springs, are not new, but are seen in various patents differently constructed and arranged, however. I
The novelty consists in the construction andarrangement of the several parts. Therefore,
NVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The arrangement of the iixed rack Q, the pawl I), with its fulcrum on the lever L, in combination with the .spring bar T and springs S for the purpose,
both of turning them out of the way and for adjusting the pressure on the choppers, in the manner' shown and specified.
2. The arrangement of the stem M with its gumelastic pad m on the soclget-shait K, in combination with the chopper-stem N, set-screw n, and end J, to-
gether with the lifters hand drum H with the pulley G,st1aptightener It, all constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
