EDWARD H. MOYLE, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
STAMP-NEILL.
To au whom z'tmoy concern: I Be it lrnown that I, EDWARD H. Morris, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a certain nen7 and useful Improvement in Stamp- Mills, ofy which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to an improvement in stamp mills, an object of this invention being to provide a mill in which the blow of the stamp on ores is increased, without adding dead or gravity weight to the stamp. Y
rllhe invention involves generally the employment of tension springs, so arranged that the full force of tension is exerted, and crystallization prevented, and in the event of breakage may be readily replaced at small expense.
The use of a helical spring in stamp mills is not new, long springs of many helices having been applied, but found disadvantageous and troublesome because of distortion and constant friction on the stamp stem, and crystallization due to torsional stress occurring during compression. Such torsion, and crystallization resultant therefrom, is especially noticeable when the spring closely hugs the stamp stem. When made large diametrically, the true plane in compression is not and cannot be preserved, and the spring assumes a snake-like or S form, the helices being thrown out of alinement relatively to each other, thus adding to the torsional stress and accelerating crystallization.
My invention therefore has for a further object to provide a spring and weight-impelled stamp, on which the full force of the spring is exerted in the direct line of its tension, crystallization is prevented or retarded, and replacement of broken springs readily effected without considerable expense, time or labor.
These objects are accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawing representing a preferred form of my invention, and showing in,
Figure 1, a sectional elevation, Fig. 2, a sectional elevation of a modified form. Fig. 3, is a fragmentary detail showing a slightly modified arrangement, and Fig. 4, is a front elevation of a complete stamp mill, showing the invention as embodied therein.
The stamp comprises the usual parts, viz. the stem 1, boss head 2, tappet 3, and shoe 4,

Varranged for engagement by a revolving vcam 7 mounted on a shaft 8, suitably journaled on frame standards 9. The said stem 1, operates in suitablev guides 10, carried by and adjustable in cross-members l1 and 12, of the frame, and comprising several externally threaded, tubular members having a nut end 13 for engagement by a wrench, a lock nut 14, serving to lock and hold said members in position of adjustment. On said standards 9, are rigidly fixed collars 15, for supporting the cross-member 11, which is held in rigid position by nuts 16 engaging the threaded ends 17 of said standards, but which, by this construction may be removed speedily and readily for replacement .of broken parts. The cross-member 12 may also be removably attached to the standard for the same purpose. Between the tappet 3 and the'guide in the cross-member 11, and slidably mounted on said stem 1, is a plurality of weights 18, held apart byy helical springs 19, surrounding said stem. These weights 18, may be provided with annular grooves 20, for the accommodation of the end helix of each spring 19, to keep the same alined and in a fixed position relatively to the stem. If it be desired to increase the speed of the drop of the stamp to augment the force of the blow, additional weights 21 and springs 22, may be provided between the guide in the cross-member 12, and the boss head 2, as seen in Fig. 3, an adjustable set collar 23, being preferably provided on the stamp stem to take the strain incident on the compression of the springs.
When the stamp stem is raised by the cam 7 the springs 19, are compressed between the slidable weights 18 and the guides 10, and upon the escape of the cam from the tappet, the stamp is impelled on the die by the coperative action of the compressed springs and the sldable weights. The springs being short in length and held by said slidable weights against excessive vibration when the stamp strikes the die, the crystallization of springs is indefinitely retarded, if not prevented.
What I claim, is
1. In a stamp mill, a stamp having a stem, guides for said stem, a tappet on said stem, a plurality of springs and slidable weights on stem and between tappet and guide, and a cam for lifting said tappet.
3. In a stamp mill, a stamp having a stem,
an adjustable tappet on said stem, adjustable and removable guides vfor said stem, an adjustable set collar for said stem, a plurality of springs between adjustable tappetV and guide and a plurality of springs between adjustable set collar and guide, 'a plu-V rality of weights slidable on said stem to.
hold said springs, and an actuating cam for raising saidadjustable tappet.
4. In a stamp mill, a stamp having a stem, adjustable guides for said stem, an adjustable tappet on said stem, springs and slidable weights on said stem and above adjustable tappet, and an actuating cam for said tappet.
5. In a stamp mill, a stem having an adjustably actuated tappet, stem guides above and below said tappet, and a plurality of springs and slidable shock-absorbing weights on stem and interposed between said tappet and stem guide.
6. In a stamp mill, a stem having an adjustably actuated tappet, and an adjustable set collar, stem guides engaging said stem, a plurality of springs and slidable shock- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Gommissironer'of Patents.k
able and removable cross members` for supporting said stem having adjustable and removable guides, an adjustable setV collar on said stem, a plurality of springs and slidablev shock-absorbing weightsV on stem between the adjustable tappet and set collar and the adjustable and removable guides-on removable cross members, and actuating means for raising said adjustable tappet.
8. In a stamp mill, the disposition of a series of slidable springs carried by slidableV shock-absorbing and protecting weights on the stamp, said springs and shock-absorbing and protecting weights located between a cross or support member fastened to standard and a member on the stamp used to impart reciprocationto said stamp.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
