TO ALL WHO IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, Jenn Bmcnwoon ond Tnnononn C. .WrLso:v, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hennn ilton, and State of Ollio, have invented a new end useful Improvement in Hond-Spinning Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following, is e full, clear, ond exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to maize and use the saine, reference 4being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is e vertical longitudinal section in the line o; x, iig. 2, oi' our improved spinning inochine.
Figure 2 is e plan view, ond
Figure 3 is o detached sectional view of the two loose pulleys on the vertical driving-shaft.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parte= This invention relatos to e new and useful improvement in the construction of hand-spinning ronchines for wool end other fibre, and consists in the arrangement of mechanism for operating with o crank noon two or more spindles set in the :iro of @circle with one pulley-hand, which dispenses with intermediate tightening pulleys, and in connection therewith n. reciprocating feed-oerringe 'The advantages of these improvements are, oheapness in the construction of the machine, simplicity of the inachinery, which performs good work, without liability to get out of order, while it is easily managed, and requires but little power to operate it. v
A. represents n long oblong frame unido of wood, ond rinly bolted together. 0n the top rails a a of th frame ore mounted n reciprocating carriage and titolo, l, provided with two feed-rolls, Z1. The shaft of t lower roll b projects at one end, end carries on its outer end n, pinion, e, that works iny o.. rncl, (i, for giving i feedmotion. The mok d is placed on a, long lever, C, pivoted et the roer end of the freine of the machine in such manner that when the front end of the lever is depressed by the operative hearing on the hondie d, the rock engages in thc pinion c, and lies horizontally, so that the pinion works freely in it the whole length of ti. e rook. On the front end of the machine any convenient number of spindles e e is set on the rolls g g", in the orc of a circle, and are actuated yby o. single hond, c", running over all oi. them, from large horizontal drivingpnlley,-`D, on the vortice-l shaft h, which takes motion by ineens of the bevel-gear 7c 'from the horizontal drivingshaft m, that is turned hy the cronk n in front of the spindles. 0n the opper end of the shaft It nrc two loose pulleys, s s', which through e, slot, i', in a lever, 77, that is pivotcd nt one end to the sido of the freine il, und fastened ot the other end to the longrnolelover C, Projecting pins fr r or inserted in the vertical shaft t above and below the loose pulleys s o', which have one?" or more projections or teeth, g', on their upper and lower sides, respectively, for striking the pins r r', and turning the pulleys alternately with the shaft la, when the slotted lever!) mises and lowers the loose pulleys ns itis elevated or depressed by the movement ot" the rocklever C, to he hereinafter explnined. Bonds w w poss around the loose pulleys s s und it u et thc rear oi the machine, ond arc fastened to the under sido of the carriage B et y in such n manner that they drow the cai'- ringe by the rotation of the loose pulleys backward und forward, alternately, When thc depression of the slotted lever lo takes place, the lower loose pulley is pressed down on tho shaft l, so that the pin r strikes the tooth and rotates the lower pulley, hy which theenrringe l is drawn hack on the ways-g and 'when the lever is elevated it ruiscs thc nppcr loose pulley s', till the pin r" strilics the projection g", and draws the carriage forward, ond thus the carriage traverses haelt and forth when thenioehino is in operation.
The operation is as follows: When the carriage and tohle B nre in position nt the forward ond of the to'blo, ond the rolls or roping of wool nrc laid upon the table, their ends are. passed between the feed-rolls, to he twisted o few times around the spindles; the long lover C is then depressed to the lower notch or shoulder z, `which engages the rook d with the pinion c, and at the seme time depresses the slotted lever y, und thus engages the lower pulley e with the pin r on the verticol shni'trvh; the crunk 'n is then turned, givingsininltnneous motion to the carriage, tho fecd-rolls, ond the spindles. 1wllhcn the carriage reaches the reor of the machine the long lever C is raised to the middle notch z, when the loose pulleys both become inoperative andthe carriage stands still. 'lhe cro-nl; continues to turn till the yarn is twisted enough, and then the long lever 'C is elevated to the upper notch e2, which raises the slotted lever 2) and thc loose pulley e to enge-,ge tie pin 7" and tooth gg', und thus reverse the motion of the carriage towards the front of' the machine. The pinion c and tho roel-1 CZ nrc :it this time disengaged, :ind the fced-rOlls nre consequently inoperative.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
`1. The loose pulleys s s on the shaft L, in combination with the slotted lever p, the long lever C, the pulleys u u, bands w w, and the carriage B, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The Combination of the feed-rolls b the pinion c, the rack d, the slotted lever 7), the pulleys s sL and the carriage B, arranged and operating substantially as set forth,
' JOHN BLAOKWOO THEODORE C. WILSON.
