EDWIN STAFFORD, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 68,464, dated September 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN OPERATING GONDENSING-ROLLERS IN CARDING MACHINES.
'di/tgt flnhuie referat it iii tlgcse 'tttets ntent mit uniting putt nt tige tuuu.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, EDWIN STAFFORD, of Manayunk, city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented a certain new andvuseful Improvement in Rubber Motion for Oarding Engines; and I i do hereby declare that the following is a-full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the sama-reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 3 is an end View.4
Other drawings are in detail,.siu1ilar letters in the drawing representing the same parts- The nature of my invention consists in giving to rubber rollers of condenser carding engines a double reciprocating longitudinal motion. The object accomplished is presenting all the surface of the rubber rollers to the action of the slubbing or sliver during the process of rubbing, preventing thereby ridges and hollows on -the surface of the rollers, which is a source of great trouble, particularly in working coarse or short-brcd material, which requires quick, short strokes of the rubbers to prepare the slubbing properly for spinning. lWith my improvement, a short or long stroke can be had at pleasure, and the same time a continuous changing 'of the relative position of the rubber rollers to the doffers to accomplish the said object.
. To enable others to make and operato my improvement, I will proceed to describe the construction andV operation of it, reference being had to the drawings. l
Letter A is a frame of a rubber motion as in ordinary use. To this frame are fitted guides for cross-heads to work in, to which cross-heads are attached roller-shafts. These cross-heads are also connected to eccentrics ou thc shaft M by means of straps, the whole of said guides, cross-heads, and eccentrics being constructed in the ordinary way. Letter M is an eccentric shaft, fitted to eross-hcads or slides, letter D, working on guides C C, which guides are fastened to the stands B B, which stands are fastened to the frame A. Letter L is an upright shaft, on which are attached cccentrics E E. The top eccentric is connected to the cross-head by means of a strap, N. The lower eccentric is connected to the shaft M by means of the strap O. Letter His a shaft, (at right angles to shaft L,) on one end of which is a worin, driving the` shaft L by means of worniwheel F. On the other end is a pulley. Letter K is a shaft, at right angles to an upright shaft M, which shafts are geared to each other by bevel-wheels. The shaft K is held in place bya hanger-box, P, which is attached to the lower slide D. 'The shaft K has a shoulder fitting on each side of the box l?, which causes said shaft to travel with the slide D. V l
The operation of my invention is as follows: Motion being .given to thc shaft K, gives to the rubber rollers a reciprocating'motiori in the usual manner, by means Aof the cccentrics on the shaft'M. -The pulley on the shaft H receives motion from one of the doifcr shafts. The shaft H and L, being geared by means of the worm and worm-wheel F, as described, gives the shaft L a slow motion, and it, by means of the ecccntrics attached thereto, gives to the shaft M a reciprocating motion .in addition to the rotary motion givenby thc shaft K, thereby giving a double reciprocating motion to thc rubbers, one being quick, the other motion slow. `The ecccntrics E E are adjustable, to give suihcient throw to accomplish said object, namely` the prevention of ridges and hollows on the surface of thc rollers.
I have described but one method of actuating shaft M, but this motion may be imparted by other mechanical contrivances, viz, a crank, or a right and left screw,` or any appliance that will give a reciprocating motion to the shaft M. v
`I claim giving tothe rubber or condensing-rollers of a earding machine a double reciprocating motion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
EDWIN STAFFORD.
Witnesse JOHN I. TuonrsoN, EDWIN HOWARD.
