To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALEB T. MOOLELLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Olympia, in the county of Thurston and State of \Vashington, have invented an Improved Rub-Iron, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in devices termed rub-irons. or chafe-irons, which are applied to the sides of wagon beds or bodies for protecting them from wear and defaccment by contact with the forward wheels in making sharp turns. I have devised an improved construction of such de vice, the same being composed of two parts, one being adapted to be secured to the wagonbody and to. hold the other, which is the wear-piece proper, .in such manner that it may be removed when worn out and a new one substituted with convenience and depatch.
The details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts are as hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of my improved rub-iron to a wagon-body. Fig. 2 is a central vertical transverse section of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate in perspective the two parts of the rub-iron separated from each other.
A and B indicate the two parts of my improved rub-iron. the removable wear-piece B is held when in use, is a thick flat plate having the central portion of one side out out at a: (see Fig. 3) to receive part B, and the remaining portion of such side provided with a vertical flange a. This part A is applied to the lower side edge of a wagon-body 'y, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the flange a abutting the outer side and the wagon-body and the horizontal part the under side of the body, as shown. The means for securing the plate A are screwbolts 0, which pass through its ends and the foot of the wagon-bed, as shown in Fig. 2. The wear-piece B has a flat horizontal portion and a flange 1), corresponding to the plate A, and its ends I) are so formed on converging lines that it constitutes a dovetail adapted to fit in the corresponding notch or The main part A, in which end edges (1 b of the two parts are inclined from the lower edge outwardthat is to say, the end edges a of the notched portion of the plate A are beveled outward from the lower side of said plate, and the adjacent edges 1) of part B are similarly inclined from its lower side outward. The two parts are thus held together when applied to a wagon-body y, as shown, yet the wear-piece B may be separated tromplate A by lifting it vertically when the latter is detached from the wagonbody. By this simple and inexpensive construction and combination of parts I produce a rub-iron whose wear-piece proper may be easily removed and a new one substituted therefor when required, while the larger or main part of the same may be used indefinitely. In other words, by renewal of the small wear-piece B when worn out and substituting a new one I practically renew the rub-iron entirely and at less than half the cost of the whole device. In practice two or more wear-pieces B may be kept in stock and sold along with each main part A by manufacturers or dealers in this class of carriageirons.
lVhat I claim is 1. The improved rub-iron com osed of two separable parts each having a ilat body portion and a vertical flange on one side, and the larger part or plate having in its inner side a dovetail notch in which the other part is adapted to fit, their contacted end edges being inclined horizontally and vertically so that when in use the central wearpiece is supported and held from detachment in both directions, substantially as described.
2. The improved rub-iron composed of a main part having an upwardly-projecting side flange and a dovetail notch in the same side, and a piece having a dovetail shape similar to said notch and thus adapted to fit and be held in the same, substantially as shown and described.
3. The improved rub-iron composed of a main part having in one side a dovetail notch and a wear-piece having a shape and size cor responding to said notch, whereby when the device is in use the wear-piece is held from detachment downward or horizontally, substantially as shown and described.
4. The improved rub-iron composed of portion and one provided with a notch in which the other is adapted to fit, the contacting edges of the two parts being so con-- stmcted that the inserted piece is supported vertically and horizontally, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a wagon-bed of the rub-iron composed of a main plate having 'a dovetail notch in its outer side, and a wear-piece proper shaped corresponding to said notch and adapted to fit therein, and
means for securing the main plate to the v wagon-bed, substantially as described.
6. The combination, with a wagon-body of the rub-iron composed of a main part, or plate, having an upwardly-projecting flange on one edge and a dovetail notch in said edge, two separable parts each. having a flat body and a wear-piece consisting of a plate having an upturned flange at its outer edge and its body portion being shaped corresponding to the notch in the main plate, whereby, when, in normal position, it is supported and held,
