UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN Z. NYQUIST, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
JOURNAL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersrPatent No. 485,213, dated November 1, 1892.
Application led .Inly 12, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN Z. NYoUIsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Jourial-Box, of which the following is a specificalon.
My invention relates to an improved journal-box, the object of which is to provide for the accurate fitting of the box to the shaft when rst applied and the subsequent adjustment of the same to take up lost motion caused by wear without the use of packing.
My invention is fully described in connection with the drawings, wherein- Figure l is a pian view. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a similar View with one of the ears of the cap-plate broken away. Fig. 4L is a plan view with the cap-plate removed. Fig. 5 is a side view. Fig. 6 is aplan view. Figs. 7 and 8 are detached perspective views of a slightly-modified form of boX.
The bed-plate A, containing the lower portion of the bearing and countersunk openings B B for bolts to secure the plate to the frame of the machinery, is also provided on opposite sides of the journal depression C with perpendicular ears D D, having inclined slots E E arranged in the ears and rising toward their outer ends or from the journal. Oil-grooves F F, arranged parallel with and upon opposite sides of the journal depression, communicate withthe latter through the small ducts G G. The cap-plate H, which contains the other portion of the journal, is provided with lateral ears K K, adapted to lie in contact with the ears on the bed-plate and provided with inclined slots L L, which intersect the slots E E. The slots L rise toward their inner ends or toward the journal, while the slots E rise toward their outer ends or from the journal.
The two members of the journalare locked together by means of the bolts M M, which engage the intersecting slots E L and E L, re-
spectively.
Serial No. 439,839. (No model.)
or slots in the ears, being so nearly horizontal, will resist a vertical-namely, an .upwardstrain, and thus avoid displacement. Furthermore, any-sized box may be successfullyV made for large as well as small shafts, because ot' the impossibility of displacement.
In Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive,l show a slightlymoditied form of box, in which the oil-cup on the cap-plate is dispensed with, andthe bed-plate is provided with a flat bottom, this form being useful in places Where the depth of space for the box is shallow and where the box is to be used upon iron frames, where it is necessary to bolt the bed-plate upon top of frame. It will be seen that the lower edges of the ears on the cap-plate extend below the lower edge of the half-bearing carried by the cap-plate, the lower half-bearing being formed in a raised boss or block upon the bed-plate, upon opposite sides of which the said ears upon the cap-plate engage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A journal-box having its base or bedplate and its cap-plate provided with parallel ears arranged to lie in contact and provided with inclined intersecting slots, said slots being engaged in pairs by through-bolts, substantially as specified.
2. In a journal-box, the combination, with a base or bed plate provided with perpendicular ears having inclined slots, of a capplate provided with lateral ears in contact' with the ears upon the bed-plate and having slots inclined to intersect the before-mentioned slots and bolts engaging said intersecting slots, substantially as specified.
3. In a journal-box, the members provided with parallel ears adapted to lie in contact and having oppositely-inclined slots which register with each other at diierent points, according to the proximity of the members, substantially as specified.
4. A j ournal-box having independent members provided with paralled ears having oppositely-inclined slots engaged by adjustingbolts, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN Z. NYQUIST.
