Description

No. 835,j691; PATENTED NOV. 13, 190s.'
B. 0. TUTTLE.
WAGON BOX FASTENER.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII 110.15. 1905 wuewtoz wwmmo 7&4 Q MZ 410 co., WASHINGTON, n. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1906.
Application filed December 15, 1905. Serial No. 291,888.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH O. TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherokee, in the county of Woods and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Box Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wagon-boxes, and more particularly a fastener for holding the box tightly to the bolsters to prevent jarring and consequent wear.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a wagon-box, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes the wagon-box, and 6 the bolster on which the box is supported. The usual standard for holding the box laterally is indicated at 7.
The fastener comprises rods 8 and 9, respectively, having hooked upper ends 10, which engage over the top edge of the box 5. The rods are connected to the bolster or some other fixed part of the running-gear of the wagon by a clip-plate 11, which extends under the bolster and has holes through which the lower threaded ends 12 of the rods extend. Nuts 13 are screwed on the threaded ends 12, and between the nuts and the clip-plate coiled springs 14 are placed on the rods, whereby they are made to hold the box on the bolster with a yielding pressure. The
box will at all times be tightly held on the bolster, all wear being taken up by the springs. The tension of the springs can be readily regulated by the nuts 13.
The rods are provided near their upper ends with forwardly-extending hooks 15, which are for the purpose of facilitating the raising of the hooks 10 over the top edge of the box 5 by using the top of the standard 7 as a fulcrum and placing a suitable lever under the hooks 15.
In the drawings only one side of the wagonbox is shown; but it is to be understood that the other side will be secured in the same manner.
I claim- 1. A wagon-box fastener comprising a clip adapted to be secured to some fixed part of the running-gear, rods having a spring connection at their lower ends to the clip, and engaging at their upper ends over the top of the wagon-box, and hooks extending from the rods near their upper ends.
2. A wagon-box fastener comprising a clip adapted to be secured to some fixed part of the running-gear, hooked rods having threaded lower ends extending through the clip, and engaging at their. upper ends over the box, nuts screwed on the threaded ends of the rods, and springs coiled around the rods between the clip and the nuts.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ELIJAH C. TUTTLE.
