JAMES MORRISON, OF MEDICINE HAT, ALBERTA, CANADA.
TONGUE-SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES MoRRIsoN. a citizen of Canada, residing at Medicine Hat, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tongue-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vehicle tongue supports and has particular application to a device for yieldingly supporting the tongue and in carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a support whereby the weight of the tongue will be removed from the draft animals and the tongue permitted to vibrate or swing to a certain extent when occasion requires.
It is also my purpose to improve and simplify the construction of spring supports for vehicle tongues and to provide a device which may be manufactured and installed at a minimum expense.
Vith the above recited and other objects in view the invention consists in the con struction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tongue support constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown in applied position. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device removed from the running gear of the vehicle.
Referring now to the accompanying draw ing in detail the numeral 1 designates the front axle of a wagon or other vehicle while 2 indicates the bolster surmounting such axle. and bolster are front hounds 3.
4L designates the Wagon tongue having the inner end thereof equipped with the usual tongue hounds 5 disposed within the hounds 3 in edge to edge contact therewith. Passed through alining openings in the hounds 3 and 5 and the tongue 4 is a pivoted bolt 6 by means of which the tongue may swing relatively to the running gear of the wagon.
Suitably fastened to the under side of the tongue adjacent to the inner end thereof is a swivel bolt 7 within which is swiveled one end of an adjusting screw 8 and threadedly engaging the adjusting screw is a block 9 provided with outwardly extending trun- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 3, 1913.
Extending upwardly from the axle Patented Mar. 24, 1914. Serial No. 787,987.
nions 10 disposed upon the opposite sides of the tongue and having pivotally secured thereto upwardly extending straps 11. Pivotally connected to the upper ends of the straps 11 are leaf springs 12-12 having the opposite ends thereof working within a slot formed between the conforming faces of the front axle and the bolster. Fastened to the inner ends of the tongue and respective hounds is a cross bar 18 adapted to engage the leaf springs 1212 so as to prevent downward swinging movement of the tongue under the action of gravity. By means of the adjusting nut 8 the block 9 may be elevated and lowered so that the tension of the leaf springs 12-12 may be decreased and increased as desired. A jam nut 14 is threaded on to the screw 8 and is adapted to bind against the block 9 to hold the latter in the desired adjusted position.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing the construction. mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent.
In practice, the cross bar 13 on the inner ends of the tongue and tongue hounds bears against the leaf springs 1212 and so relieves the draft animals of the weight of the tongue and at the same time forms a yieldable support whereby the tongue may vibrate when necessary.
I claim 1. The combination with the front axle and bolster thereof, and the front hounds, of a tongue, hounds on said tongue placed in edge to edge contact with said first hounds, a pivotal connection between the first hounds and the hounds on said tongue, a cross bar carried by the inner ends of the tongue and the respective hounds, leaf springs disposed above said cross bar and each having one end disposed between said bolster and axle and a connection between the other ends of said springs and the tongue whereby when the tongue descends the said cross bar will engage the springs to yieldingly support the tongue, said connection comprising a block, an adjustable connection between said block and tongue, trunnions carried by said block and projecting outwardly therefrom at opposite sides of the tongue and means connecting said trunnions with the respective ends of the springs.
2. The combination with the front axle and bolster thereof, and the front hounds, of
a tongue, hounds on said tongue placed in edge to edge contact with said first hounds, a pivotal connection between the first hounds and the hounds on said tongue, a cross bar carried by the inner end of the tongue and the respective hounds, leaf springs disposed above said cross bar and each having one end disposed between said bolster and axle and a connection between the other ends of said springs and the tongue whereby when the tongue descends the said cross bar will engage the springs to yieldingly support the tongue, said connection comprising a block, an adjustable connection between said block and tongue, trunnions carried by said block and projecting outwardly therefrom at opposite sides of the tongue, and straps connecting said trunnions with the respective ends of the springs.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES MORRISON.
