PATENTED NOV. 27, 1906.
LGURNBYL ADVERTISING DEVICE FOR TELEPHONES.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 16, 1908.
THE NORRIS PETERS 50., wnsmuomu, n. c,
EDMUND GURNEY, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
ADVERTISING DEVICE FOR TELEPHONES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov. 27, 1906.
Application filed March 16, 1906. Serial No. 306,336.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND GURNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Advertising Devices for Tele hones; and I do declare the following to e a true specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs. I
My invention relates to improvements in the construction and application of an advertising device to be adjusted and attached to a tele hone battery-box.
he object of my invention is to provide a simple and easily-adjustable casing-frame for a telephone-box having folding sides, the frame of the casing having spaces on all its parts suitable for the dis lay of a directory or advertising matter. T ese objects, as will be hereinafter seen, are accomplished by the simple, novel, and useful device which I have discovered. I attain these objects and other practical advantages by the mechanism, construction, combination, and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tele phone with my device attached to the battery-box. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the top of the casing-frame, showing folding or swinging sides of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a part of the bottom of the batterybox and my frame, showing a strap-fastener for the frame.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the views.
In Fig. 1, 'A is the top panel of the frame, resting upon the top of the battery-box, the frame of this panel being fixedly secured to the frame of the front panel B. C C are the inner side leaves of the frame, and D D are the outer side leaves of the frame or casing, Figs. 1, 2. The casing is constructed with the parts :10 x w of suitable form and of material adapted to receive the top, front, and side panels of glass or other transparent material, back of which is placed the advertisingsurfaces', consisting of paper or other suitable material. The side leaves or wings C C and D D are retained in closed position against the side of the battery-box by means of hooks or catches E E, Fig. 1. The casingframe is provided with a strap-fastener F, Fig. 3, secured to the front frame at the bottom thereof and at right angles to the same, so as to adapt it to project beneath the battery-box and to be secured to the bottom of the box withscrews or other means. The primary side leaves C C are pivot-hinged at the outer respective corners of the front frame on the pivot-hinges o o, and the secondary side leaves D D are likewise pivot-hinged at the opposite side of the primary side leaves on the pivot-hinges w to.
It will be seen that my device, being constructed as described and shown, providesa removable framed casing easily adjustable to the ordinary telephone-box for battery by slipping it over the box from the front. It is then fixedly secured to the box by means of the strap-fastener Funderneath. It will be seen also that on releasing the side leaves or wings C C and D D from the catches E E these side leaves or wings will swing outwardly and also laterally, so that the advertising matter displayed on both sides of each may be easily brought into view of a person standing directly in front of the telephone,
while advertising matter in the top and front fixed panels is always visible. Thus my device, as herein shown, provides ten different surfaces about a telephone-box upon which to display advertising matter, and all in the small space about a telephone-box of the usual form and dimensions. The side leaves are also easily folded back against the side of the box when not in use and are not in the way, being retained in'such position by suitable fastening means. There is thus provided a unique, practical, and handy telephone directory or advertiser, which does not interfere with the use of the box for the purpose of writing upon it or of access to the battery, for when the side leaves are outwardly swung the door of the battery-box is easily opened.
Having described my device as hereinbefore set forth, I claim 1. In an advertising device for telephones, the combination with a telephone batterybox, of a removable frame, constructed with top and front parts at right angles to each other, the front part of the frame being provided with means at its bottom to secure the casing-frame to the under side of the telephone-box, the front part being provided on each side with primary and secondary swinging frames, pivot-hinged and adapted to swing laterally and outwardly, the top and front parts of the casing-frame, being provided with panels of transparent material the battery-box, all substantially as de:
scribed.
2. An advertising device for telephones, consisting of a removable framed casing, constructed with top and front parts at right angles to each other, the front part of the frame being provided with means at its bottom to' secure the casing-frame to the under side of a telephone-box, the frontpart being also provided on' each side with primary and secondary swinging frames, pivot-hinged and adapted to swing laterally and outwardly, the top'an'd'front parts of the casing-frame bea ing provided with panels of transparent material through which advertising matter is displayed on suitable material, the sides'wmg'mg'leaves being similarly provided, but
:further so that advertising matter may be displayed from each side of the same, and having means to lock said leaves to the sides of the battery-box, all substantially as described.- v, v V
EDMUND GUR-NEY. I Witnesses: V v HERBERT T. NIoHoLs,
