Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. D. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Junta, in the county of Otero and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditch-Dams, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ditch-dams, and more particularly to temporary dams for the purpose of stopping the flow or changing the course of water in irrigation.
The object of this invention is to provide a ditch-dam which may be easily and quickly adjusted to fit any style or construction of ditch, and when so adjusted and put in place will efficiently perform all of its intended functions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dam which may be so adjusted and placed as to change the course of water or check the same when irrigating level or rolling land.
A further object is to provide a dam of the character above described and to construct the same in a simple, inexpensive, compact, and durable manner, one which when not in use may be folded for convenience of packing or carrying.
l/Vith these objects in view, and such others as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the particular construction of the various parts, and in the novel manner of combination and arrangement of said parts, all of which will be more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved dam, the blades being adjusted to fit one style of a ditch. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other side, the blades being adjusted to fit another style of a ditch. Fig. 3 is also a side elevation illustrating the blades as adjusted to fit a third style of a ditch. Fig. 4 is likewise a side elevation illustrating the blades as adjusted for the purpose of checking or changing the course of water when irrigating level or rolling land. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the point, showing the slot.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 represents the handle consisting of a metallic pipe, one end of which is externally screwthreaded, as shown at 2, which threads are adapted to receive the internal screw-threads 3 upon the point 4 or the handle and point may be secured together by a pin. This point is provided with a slot 5, in which are pivoted, by means of the bolt 6, two corresponding blades 7, consisting of thin sheet-steel so shaped as to have its side edges at angles with respect to each other and its ends rounded or curved, as shown at 8 and 9. Pivoted to the blades are corresponding arms 10, which are likewise pivoted to a slide 11, mounted upon and adapted to slide up and down on the handle and to be locked in any desired position by means of the set-screw 12 operated by a thumb-nut or a handle, as may be desired.
It will be seen that in order to adjust the blades in the position shown in Fig. 3 it is necessary that the blades should change their positions from right to left and vice versa, and that in operation the dam is adjusted to suit the style ditch in which it is to be used, after which the blades are locked in position and the dam forced in place. Its edges cutting into the bottom and sides of the ditch serve to retain it in position.
Having thus described the various features of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a dam, a handle having a point upon one end thereof, corresponding blades pivoted to said pointed portion, a slide upon the handle, arms pivotally connecting the said blades and slide, substantially as specified.
2. In a dam, a handle having a point upon one end, a slot in the pointed end, corresponding blades pivoted in said slot, a slide upon the handle, arms pivotally connecting the said blades and slide, and means for locking the slide in a fixed position, substantially as specified. I
3. In a dam, a handle, a point secured to said handle, a slot in said point, corresponding blades pivoted in said slot, the side edges of the blades being at an angle with respect to each other, the end edges of the blades being rounded, a slide upon the handle, a setscrew for locking the said slide in a fixed position, arms pivotally connecting the said slide to the said blades, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
