POCKET-RULE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,865,'dated December 21, 1886.

To aZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY J oNEs,

of the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec facture; and to these ends the invention consists in the construction, combination, andarrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents in plan view an embodiment of Iny invention. Fig. 2 is a sirnilar view showing rule adjusted for use as a T-square. Fig. 3 is an edge View of the same, and Fig. f1 is -a section on line :v a: of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A. designates a pocket rule or measure, having arms a civ/,Which are connected or jointed together atb by means of a hinge, B. The arm a is provided with a hinge, b', to allow the outer end of the arm to be folded upon itself, as hereinafter described. The hinge B is provided around its edge with recesses or inlets b2, which are spaced apart at different degrees of pitch in the arc of a circle and are geometrically correct, and with these recesses or inlets engages a slide, b3,

' which is affixed on the arm c of the rule. This mechanism permits of the adjustment of the square-blade to any pitch or angle which will permit the slide to engage with either of the notches b2.

Near the inner end of the arm A of the rule or measure I attach a plate or clip, G, which is pivoted at o. rlhis clip is turned down so as to rest along the edge of the arm when the device is used as a rule, and when same is to be used as a T-square is tux-ned into the position shown in Fig. 3. In the latter position the clip prevents the hinged end of the arm from being bent, broken, or strained. The slidefb2 may be secured to the arm a by a dovetail joint, or in any other suitable manner.

I do not limit myself to the exact form and construction or parts herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention, but reserve the right to make such changes and modifications in the construction asclearly fall within the scope of the invention.

What I claim is- 1. A combined pocket rule and square having two or more sections, as a a', hinged to- 'gether, as at B, one section being rigid and the other having a sub-hinge, as b', and means for locking said sections at an angle to each other, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, in a pocket rule and T-square having two or more jointed arms or sections, of an intermediate hinge, as b', to permit one arm to fold upon itself, a pivoted plate or clip, a hinge, as B, 4having notches b2,

and a locking-slide, as and forthe purpose set forth.
