'ROBERT Vc. DALToN, or sAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HAIR DRESSING AND To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ,Roniiii'r C. DAL'roN', a citizen of the United States, residing in the Francisco and State of California, have vinvented new and useful in Hair Dressing and Shampooin Devices, of whichthe following is a speci ication.
My invention relates to a device for hair dressing and shampooing purposes.
Its o ject is to the head which wi l enable one to have his or her hair sham oo'ii while sitting upright, and which willpnot allow-the water to run over the face or down the neck, which will be sim le, practical, and a great convenience bot to the hair-dresser and to the customer.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and tbe combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawin s, in which ig'ure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my invention, showing the latter in o erative position. Fig.. 2. is a plan view o the device. Fig. 3 is a detail of a bow.
In carrying out my invention I employ a suitable frame or rim A, of wood or metal, a propriately sha ed -so that when a sheet oiJ waterproof fa ric which is flexible in whole or in part is stretched over it.an elongated shallow trough wearer of the' 4device,isI act as a drain to carry the water rearward? This frame is mately straight sides for the greater part of of its length and slightly convergent to the rear, the wider front or-'head end dropped slightl below the plane of the sides and curve but lwith the narrowerl rear or discharge end dropped considerably below the sides and formin asort of widened and rather dee V. T is frame forms a stretcher for a suita le water roof fabric, as 2part of which at least is of e astio material; as rubber, (indicated at 3.) This elastic ortion is provided with a. hole 4 to allow tlie elastic portion to be slipped part way over the head and form a drain below the hair, around the brow and neck, andabovethe ears. This elastic ortion 3 is of sufficient size to accommodate itself. to the head of the wearer and form a trou h around the' front and sides of -the hea while the rearward continuation of the Specification' of Letters Patent. Application nea iugm aient. sei-mr. 219.384.
rovide an attachment ior will be formed to su port the bairclear of the shoulders, if t ie a woman, and-' here shown as made of a con'-l tinuous piece of wire with straight or approxi-f4 sHAMPooiNe. Device.A

it has no other function than' to act 'as a drain into a suitable receptacle.
When the device is to be used, one orniore ribs or bows 5 may of frame A to operate to vive re'at'er concavity to theelastic materiali.v refei'ably ythese bows are of elastic lmateriaL'sueh 'as' 'spr'iifigi wire, and have loops' 6 at thei're'iids to' allow them to be quickly en gagedwiththe 'sides' 'of .frame A and to be easil 1 removed. Obviously these ribs or bows cou d be set in permanently but l prefer to niake them removable; Aso as not to keep the-elastic portion 3 of the sheet on tension all lthe time when the device is not in use. By taking'out the ribs after using the device the sheet is allowed to relax,.and in consequence will last much longer than if the bows were always in place.
ln practice the bows areput in position, preferably one on each side of the hole 4. :hei'i the device is placed on the person to be sliampooed, the hair only appearing above the trough and the entire weight of the device resting around the forehead and neck and above the ears. No'further support for the device is necessary than that provided by the w earer. The elastic ortion grips not uncomfortably at all the ace and sags just enough that alll the water is directed .into the ru ber trough around the head. lf it were attempted to support the device from the sides by strings or otherwise, the edges of the rubber around the head would be made the lowest part of the surrounding trough,- with the result that water would be leaking down the neck and over the face of the cus'- tonier. On the other hand, the weight of my device, though trifling in itseli, is sufficient to cause the rubber to contact with the head and direct the water away 'from the neck and head. At the same time the shape of the frame A and the bows 5 insure the proper eoncavity to the rubber sheet all around the head to retain the Water and lead it back away from the customer. The eustoniers chair may be disposed near a bucket or sink, and the drain may take lace directly thereinto, or the device may e rovided at the rear end, as here shown, wit a spout 7, with suitable means for the attachment of a hose 8.
The eat advantage of the device is that it enab es one to be s anipooed while sitting upright and without leaving the chairl or to carry the water used in shampooing back sag from the line ofortion 3 may or may not beelastic, since be engaged with'the'side's ing-of a lig t frame or rim having its sides to vthe'frame and conforming to the outline having 4to assume cramped or ungraceful oses. It is light, cheap, and durable, and. I liave used it most successfully. It ma be -used for shanipooin` or dressing the-halr of men or women. W en used on a womans head, it serves to support and slread the hair, keeps it olf of the shoulders,.a lows it to be thorouofhly 'relieves tbe discomfort.
Having thus described my invention, what I-claim, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is-
An improved hair-dressing lapparatus of substantial] rectangular form and-conslstcustomer of much fatigue and straight'for the maar portion of their f'len gth and l then -.converg1ng' toward .the delivery end of the a paratus, said converging sides being turne downwardl a-fabrlc secured .the head is inserte Washed and quickly dried, arid 'one end of the v :sar-5,314
thereof, and provided with an o ening to receive the head, the wall of sai o enng being stretchable, whereby it close y embraces the head to form a water-ti ht joint .and said wall bein turned upwar ly when cgl, to form adrain below the halr, around the brow and neck, and above the ears, bows removably engaging the sides of the frame, and the fabric and preserving the trough-like form of the latter,
trough being ered to'form a vdelivery-funnel, substantially ais-'described'. I.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand-in presence of' two subscribing Wit nesses'.
