Description

April 19, 1960' K. WAMBACH 2,932,833
SHADE FOR SEASHORE BEACHES Filed Sept. 19, 1956 COMBINED HEAD-REST AND SUN W ATTORNEY United States Patent C) COMBINED HEAD-REST AND SUN-SHADE FOR SEASHORE BEACHES Katharina Wambach, Philadelphia, Pa. Application September 19, 1956, Serial No. 610,825
2 Claims. (Cl. -337) The object of my invention is to devise a novel combined head-rest or seat and a sun-shade which will provide a head-rest and protection from the sun for a person lying on the beach at the seashore.
A further object is to devise a novel construction and arrangement of the component parts so that the device can be folded substantially flat to form a carrying bag adapted to receive a bathing suit, towels and other accessories used by a person on the beach.
A further object is, to devise a novel frame adapted to receive a cushion or seat of sponge rubber or other material provided with a removable cover, and a novel foldable, adjustable sun-shade of bowed members inserted into a removable cover and having their ends pivotally connected with the frame.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter appear in the detailed description and the appended claims.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of it which I have found in practice will give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited, except by the scope of the appended claims to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein set forth.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my combined headrest and sun-shade embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view, the section being taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view.
Figure 4 is a rearelevation with the sun-shade in folded condition for carrying.
Figure 5 is a side elevation with the sun-shade in folded condition.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the frame and flat ribs of the sun-shade with the pivot members.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary section.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings:
The frame of the head-rest consists of a half round flat strip as seen at 1 and a flat crossbar 2 having upturned ends 3 to which the ends of the strip 1 are secured. The frame is adapted to receive a cushion 4 insertable into and removable from a cover 5, the front wall of the latter having an Opening closed by a zipper arrangement 6. The cover has rows of stitching forming pockets into which the frame members can be moved.
The sun-shade has rows of stitching forming pockets into which flat ribs are introduced and the free ends of such ribs are pivotally connected at a common point to the head-rest frame by the pivot forming fastening devices such as bolts or screws 9 and thumb nuts 10. The bottom of the cover for the head-rest has an additional strip 11 secured to it to form a pocket having one 2,932,833 Patented Apr. 19, 1860 end open as at 12, such pocket being for the reception of a towel, soap or other beach accessories.
It will thus be clear that the cover for the head-rest can be readily removed from the cushion and the frame members withdrawn, and the cover will then be in condition for cleaning.
The cover for the sun-shade has its ribs removable so that such cover can be cleaned, when desired.
The sun-shade can be angularly adjusted as desired by loosening and then tightening the thumb nuts.
The rear end of the cushion and of the head-rest cover is rounded so that when the sun-shade is folded fiat and aligned with the head-rest, the sun-shade forms a carrying handle with such handle having the necessary clearance withthe head-rest.
The frame of the head-rest maintains the formation when used as a head-rest or a seat, and. also when the device is used as a carrying bag.
As shown in Figure 7, lines of stitching 13 form a passage or tunnel to receive the crossbar 2, and in a similar manner the lines of stitching 14 form a passage or tunnel for a rib 7 of the sun-shade. The frame member is received in a similar passage or tunnel in the cover 5.
The covers 5 and 8 can be made of fabric, plastic or other desired material which may have waterproofing characteristics.
The frame members and ribs may be of metal, plastic or other desired material.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel device which has special utility since it can be used as a seat or head-rest with an adjustable sun-shade and also as a bag with the sun-shade in a folded condition to provide a grasping handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined head-rest and sun-shade, comprising a head-rest frame consisting of a flat strip bent in a half round shape and a straight front fiat strip having upturned ends fixed to the ends of the half round strip, a seat cover having a rounded rear portion and a straight front portion and having lines of stitching forming pockets to receive the head-rest frame strips, a cushion shaped to fit within said half round strip and to rest on the straight front strip, a sun-shade having a cover with lines of pocket forming stitching and having curved ribs removably received in the cover pockets, and adjustable fastening devices securing the ends of the ribs to the ends of the head-rest frame strips, said curved ribs having their radii greater than the radius of the half round fiat strip of the head-rest frame, whereby, when the sunshade is folded fiat in alignment with the head-rest, frame and cushion, it forms a carrying handle having a clearance between it and the head-rest frame and cushion and the cover.
2. The construction defined in claim 1, wherein a pocket forming strip is secured to the bottom of the head-rest cover.
