Abstract

An adjustable sun hood comprising: four U-shaped aluminium bars 1-A extending out on a locking pivot mechanism 1-B, with an additional three bars, half way up the outermost bar, which also extend to provide additional coverage 1-E, the main bars adopting a staggered arrangement allowing them to sit alongside each other and fold into a flat pack unit; a UV/A and UV/B mesh material 1-C providing a canopy between the bars. The sun hood also has: two fastenable, adjustable, elastic straps for attaching it to a sun bed; interior pockets; material attached to the base 1-D for support use and extra stability.

Background

This invention relates to a device for shading a persons face, neck and shoulders from the sun.

When lying in the sun, either on a sunbed or on the beach, a person often likes to cover up their face for the following reasons: * The face is easily burnt; * Sun speeds up the aging process; * The suns glare on your eyes can be damaging; and * The sun can cause heatstroke and headaches if the face and neck are exposed for a period of time.

Keeping the face and neck cool and safely covered Is not that easy with just a hat on -it tends to make you hotter and it does not protect the neck area or give you enough shade if you are trying to sleep or read.

Umbrellas provide full shade but you have to keep moving your sunbed or towel around as the sun moves. Or you try moving the umbrella itself -which can also be quite an effort.

With the invention of an adjustable hood these problems can be resolved. The hood will fit any sunbed or can be used lying flat on the ground. It is adjustable so it can be angled to the sun. Additional features are included in the section below, which reference the accompanying drawings.

The hood would be similar when opened to the shape of a baby pram hood and * A rigid bar running round the top of the back rest of a bed.

* 3 more rigid lightweight aluminum bars which concertina out using a locking pivot device. (D1-A) * An additional smaller concertina of bars which comes out half way up to give additional angle against the sun, without making the person using it feel claustrophobic (Secondary Canopy D1-E).

* (D1-C) Between the bars will be a UV/A & UV/B protective mesh material.

The person using it will be able to see through the mesh, which is good for security and means they will not feel too closed in. The mesh also provides a free flow of air and can be printed with company logos.

02. Fully Extended View This drawing illustrates that the hood can be laid down flat as well.

(02-A) Each aluminum bar will be slightly smaller than the one before it, so that when it folds back down each ones fits inside the other thus making it flat pack.

A bottom layer of material lies on the sand (D2-C). This serves to hold the hood down on both surfaces i.e. The beach and on a sunbed as the person using it will be lying on it. This will be made out of a waterproof wipeable material.

The hood will fully extend to 900 (maybe more depending on prototype). The pivot mechanism (D2-B) will click and lock to whichever position you put it to, both at the base and the secondary canopy (D2-E).

Inside the hood would be loops and pockets for Ipod, Mobile Phone and Purse/Wallet (D2-D).

Claims I. An adjustable sun hood comprising 4 U-shaped aluminium bars,

three of which pull out on a pivot-type mechanism.
2. An adjustable sun hood according to claim I where the pivot-type mechanism clicks round and locks to any angle.
3. An adjustable sun hood according to claim 1, where in between the bars is a UVA & UVB protective mesh-like fabric.
4. An adjustable sun hood according to claim 1 where a secondary "canopy" or set of bars is placed part way up the last front bar, and pulls out again by using another pivot-type mechanism to provide further angling of the sun hood.
5. An adjustable sun hood according to claim I and 4, where each of the aluminum bars are smaller than the one before it, so the unit folds up into flat pack.
6. An adjustable sun hood that can be attached to most sunbeds by way of two elastic straps hooking over the top two corners of the back rest or by way of straps that click together and are adjustable.
7. An adjustable sun hood that has pockets inside for mobile phone, ipod and tabs for headphones
8. An adjustable sun hood that has a piece of material as its base on which the person lies providing additional stability.
