the following is a full, clear, and exact descripi tion.
Our invention relates to improvements in car-door closing and locking devices; and its object 1s to provide simple and mex enslve means for closing and automatically ocking car-doors.
A further object is to provide means whereby a car-door may be readily opened or closed by a person standing on the ground beside the car.
To accomplish these objects, we provide a bar of suitable dimensions forked at one end to engage the car-door and sliding at the opposite end in a guide fixed to the car. This bar is provided with a pin surrounded by a loose sleeve Which engages a slot in the end of a pivoted lever. The opposite end of the lever is provided with a handle and 'is adapted to engage a spring locking-catch ixed to the car. The lever and the spring-catch are furnished with holes ada ted to register with one another in order that the wire of a seal may be passed therethrough.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of our device attached to a cardoor and shows the osition of the parts when the door is closed). Fig. 2 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 1, but shows the door o en. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the s iding bar. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the pin and sleeve and shows a ortion of the bar. Fig. 5 is an enlarged si e elevation of the spring locking-catch.
In the above-defined figures, l designates a freight-car having adoor 2. A bar 3 is provided at one end with a pair of broad plates 3a adapted to lie on each side of the door andl be sunk flush with the surface thereof. Toward the center of the bar 3 is a pin 4, surrounded by a loose sleeve 14, which engages a slot 4a in one end of the lever 6. The end of the bar 3 remote from the door 2 is supported by a guide 5. The lever 6 is provided toward its center with a slot 7a, engaging a pin 7, mounted 1n a block 8,
vided with a sleeve similar to the sleeve 14. The opposite end of the lever 6 is provided with a hole l1 and a handle 6a. The lever 6 is also bent outwardly at 12 and again at 13, as 'shown in Fig. 3. In the path of that part of the lever 6 adjacent the handle 6a is a block 9, carrying a spring-catch 10, approximately of the form shown in Fig. 5. The free end of this spring-catch is provided with a hole 11a, adapted to register with the hole 1l in the lever, so that the Wire of a seal may be passed through the two holes when the door is in locked position, as shown in Fig. l. The lever 6 is prevented from slipping out of engagement with the pins 4 and 7 by means of straps l5 or other suitable means.
The operation of the device, considering the door to be closed and locked, as in Fig. l, and sealed, consists in removing the seal in the usual manner and then depressing the spring catch l0 to free the lever 6. The operator then grasps the handle 6EL and throws it to the left until the door 2 is open as far as desired. The slots 4a and 7a will take up the curvilinear motion of the lever, andthe sleeves 14 render the bearing of the lever on the pins 4 and 7 almost frictionless.
The advantages of this device will be obvious. Car-doors may be opened and closed with great ease and will be securely locked by the operation of closing. A further advantage is that the seals may be readily examined by the inspector when standing on the ground.
The device may be applied to any of the existing ty es of freight-car doors without alterations 1n the door. The closure may be applied with equal facility to elevator-doors of similar ty e.
Having tlius described our invention so that the same may be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the class described comprising a door, a bar rigidly secured thereto, a guide for said bar, a centrally-pivoted lever attached to said bar, and means for locking said lever in position.
2. The combination with a car-door of a sliding bar secured thereto, a guide for said bar, a centrally-pivoted lever attached to which is fixed to the car 1. The pin 7 is pro- ICO said bar by means of a pinoperating ina slot in position.
3. The combination with a oar-door of a sliding bar rigidly secured thereto, a guide for said bar7 a oentrally-pivoted lever coperating With said bar by means of a pin operating in a slot in said lever, and means for automatically looking said door in closed position.
4, The combination with a car-door of a sliding bar rigidly secured thereto, a guidey for said bar, a eentrally-pivoted lever pro vided with a longitudinal end slot, a pin in the sliding bar operating in said slot, Whereby said lever is Capable of arcuate motion, and means for automatically looking said door in closed position.
5. The combination with a Car-door of a sliding bar secured thereto,v a guide for said bar, a eentrally-pivoted lever Provided at its pivotal point With a lon itudinal slot, a second slot in the end of said lever cooperating with a pin in said sliding bar, and means for automatically looking said door in closed position.
