Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
Application filed February 21, 1906. Serial No. 302,265.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. STEINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Route-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to route-boxes con taining a register and a memorandum to guide the carrier in the collection and delivery of mail-matter, packages, or other similar articles. It is adapted to be attached to the carrier on the outside of his garments, so that it is readily reached without unbuttoning his coat, and, being provided with a pencil, memoranda may be made and the record examined without difficulty;
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, its various features being referred to by letters, similar letters denoting corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device shown to be attached to a belt which isshown fragmentarily. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line a: :1: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the interior frame with portions partly broken away. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the inner frame. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section taken on line a: :1: of Fig. 4 and showing adjacent parts of the rollers.
The letter A in the drawings designates the casing of the device, which is provided with a longitudinal opening a.
B is a portion ofa waist-belt, to which the box is hung by means of the loops 1) I), which are connected to staples a a on the upper edge of the casing A. An end of the casing A is covered by a part C, which constitutes one end of a frame which occupies the interior of the casing. c is the other end of this frame, and these ends are connected by a piece F, angular in cross-section, whose front surface f is plane and is presented toward the opening a in the casing. The inner frame is held in the casing by a thumb-screw H, which passes through a hole in the end of the casing and engages the threaded hole h in the frame.
D D are rollers in the inner frame, operated by thumb-knobs d d. A record and memorandum sheet E is attached to these rollers and is movable forward or backward. This sheet passes in front of the plane surface f and is exposed at the opening a in the casing. This sheet bears the directions for the carrier and has a memorandum-space e, in which are to be written any matter for record, the surface f supporting the sheet for that purpose. A pencil-holder is provided within the piece F, the pencil 9 being passed through an orifice in the end C and being frictionally held by leaf-springs G, fixed on the inner faces of the piece F. A friction-spring i is secured on a projection I to engage the outer surfaces of wheels (1 cl, which are rigid on the same shaft with the rollers D D and act as a brake on said rollers. The sheet-memoranda appear to an observer to be upside down; but when the box is raised by the carrier for inspection the record is correctly disposed for him.
IVhat I claim, and desire to secure, is-
1. A route-box comprising a case having a longitudinal front opening, a removable frame in said case, a piece F angular in crosssection in said frame presenting a plane face toward said front opening, a spring pencilholder within and connected to said piece 'F, rollers in said frame, exterior knobs to'turn said rollers and a sheet on said rollers adapted to be moved between said plane surface and said case-opening as described.
2. A route-box comprising a case having a longitudinal front opening, a removable frame in said case, a piece F angular in crosssection in said frame presenting a plane face toward said front opening, a spring pencilholder within and connected to said piece F, rollers in said frame, exterior knobs to turn said rollers, a sheet on said rollers adapted to be moved between said lane surface and said case-opening and a bra e to control said rollers, substantially as herein set forth.
8. A route-box comprising a case having a longitudinal front opening, a removable frame in said case, a piece F angular in crosssection in said frame presenting a plane face toward said front opening, a pencil-holder formed of springs within and connected to said piece F, rollers in said frame, exterior knobs to turn said rollers, a sheet on said rollers adapted to be moved between said plane surface and said case-opening, wheels at the inner ends of said rollers and rotating therewith and a friction-spring contacting with said wheels for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE A. STEINER. Witnesses:
