Description
March 4, 1930. F. wlDoE l RECORDING AND ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed March 22, 1929 i m3 4 83 o v @L ..2 TH iv l@ {Vi/H Fwd Wdoe A'. t/rttomeg Patented Mar. 4, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT lOFFICE FRED WIDOE, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA RECORDING AND ADVERTISING DEVICE Application filed March 22., 1929. Serial No. 349,210.
required when approximately five hundred miles have been driven to prevent undue wearing of the bearings, and various recording devices more or less eliicient have been employed and carried by the automobile as a rej minder to the driver so that relubrication will l'ao not be neglected.`
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a recording device which may be readily and conveniently adjusted for indicating a predetermined distance. Another object is to provide a device for the purpose described which may be produced at a nominal expense, may be quickly adjusted and carried in a car.
The invention includes a device adapted for advertising, andis of particular advantage in this respect since it may exhibit the name of a producer of oils and gasoline for holding and extending trade to consumers, the latter being benefited by use of the device. Y
While the recording and advertising 'device may be used for other purpose it has been found t0 be 0f particular advantage for the uses mentioned. It is so inexpensive in manufacture that it is furnished free to car owners by dealers in oil and gasoline.
With the foregoing objects in view the invention presents a new and useful construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, where- 1n,-
Fig. l is a view of the front side ofthe device when folded. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, the elastic loops being` removed and the device being inverted. Fig. 3 is a view of the inner sides of the device when unfolded. Fig. 4t is a view showing one of the sides of a recording strip. Fig. 5 illustrates the reverse side of the strip shown in Fig. t.`
Referringy now to the drawing for a more particular description, I provide a front leaf 6 and a rear leaf 7 each being provided midway between the side-edges with an aperture 8.
As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing the two leaves mentioned are joined and may be folded on the dotted line to dispose the apertures 8 in register and may be pressed against each other by elastic bands 9 shown in Fig. l, the apertures 8 being of advantage to permit the device to be hung upon a hook (not shown) upon the dash board or other part of an automobile convenient for inspection. However the leaves 6 and 7 if desired may consist of separate cards corresponding in size and form and may be held together by the elastic bands mentioned with said apertures 8 in register. Notches m are formed in the edges of the leaves for receiving the bands 9.
n the use of the device the leaves 6 and 7 are normally disposed with their inner sides in engagement and the front and rear sides when disposed in folded relation, are used for inspection and adjustments, and it will be understood that the device when inspected is disposed in the position shown in Fig. l of the drawing and that, when adjustments are to be made, the end of the device provided with apertures 8 is swung toward the operator, and lwhen the device has been swung approximately a half circle in the direction mentioned the parts upon the rear side may be inspected or adj usted.
Thev leaf 7 isincised to provide a pair of rows of slots 13 and a pair of rows of slots lll, these slots being formed transversely of the leaf, and disposed approximately parallel with reference to each other, and threaded in ythe slots of the rows 13 and lll are the strips 10, and while only four strips are shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, for recording a distance less than 10,00() miles, it is obvious that a greater number of strips could be employed, if desired, and operation would be the same.
A window is formed in the leaf 6, said Aio window being provided by use of apertures 15, these being disposed in alignment transversely of said leaf, the distance of these apertures from each other corresponding to the distance apart of the strips 10, and it will be understood that these strips may have sliding movements in their slots to register any desired number less than 10,000 to'indicate the number of miles traveled or to be traveled, said number appearing at the apertures 15.
The flexible slide-strips gently resist. sliding movements through their slots, but by grasping an end-portion of a stripwith a thumb and finger, an operator may readily adjust thel strips for registration of said numbers, and on account of the construction described the particular number registered by use of the strips 10 will appear at the apertures '15.
Operation of the device will now be described, and for this description it is assumed that the lubricant should be changed for each 500 miles of travel. At the time the driver replenishesk his car with a lubricant, and assuming that the speedometer registers 7154 miles he, by moving the slidestrips, causes the number 7 654 to appear upon the leaf 7 adjacent to the sight-line 16 and, as described, this last named number will also appear at the apertures 15.
The device is then placed where it may be compared with the numbers recorded by the speedometer-,to serve as a warning or reminder, and when the number of miles recorded by the speedometerequals the nurnber exhibited by the device, the driver will know that a new lubricant should be sup# plied.
Whie I have shown and described details of construction as one embodiment of the invention, I do not wish to limit myself in this respect, and changes may be made in form, size, proportion of parts and minor details, said changes kbeing determined by the scope of the invention as claimed.
Since a part of each flexible strip is disposed bet-Ween the leaves it is necessary that identical numerals atthe respective sides of a strip shall be disposed in planes adjacent to each other as shown in Figs. t and of the drawing. For instance, the numeral 7 exhibited at the window shown in Fig. 1 because that side of the flexible strip exhibiting said numeral is disposed between the leaves, and the correspondingvnumeral 7 on the opposite side of the flexible strip is exhibited, as shown in 2, since it is disposed in an adjacent plane.
I claim as my invention,-
1. In a device for the purposes described, a leaf having a window, a second leaf pressed against the first leaf and provided with slots, a plurality of exible approximately parallel strips each bearing numerals on its opposed sides Vand disposed on the second Vleaf with parts thereof engaging in said slots to exhibit a Vselected numeral on the second leaf and to exhibit a corresponding numeral at said window.
2. In a device for the purposes described,
a leaf having a window, a second leaf having slots arranged in pairs transversely thereof and pressed against the first named leaf, a plurality of fiexible stripsbearing numerals on their respective sides, the numerals on one of saidsides corresponding Vto the numerals upon the other side, each strip .being disposed on thesecond'leaf to exhibit a selected numeral and having a part disposed between said leaves to exhibit a numeral atsaid window. n,
V3. In a device for the purposes described,
a leaf provided with a window,l a second leaf in engagement with the first named leaf, a plurality of strips each bearing numerals on its opposed sides and having parts disposed on the outer side of the second leaf to exhibit a selected numeral and having a part disposed ony the'inner side of the second leaf to exhibit a numeral, corresponding to said selected numeral, at said window.
.ico
4. In a device for the purposes described,
