Patented Feb. 22, 1938 UNITED sTATs ADVERTISING DEVICE Frederick W. Quidas, New York, N. Y.
Application June 22, 1937, Serial No. 149,675
4 Claims.
The invention relates to advertising devices of the type which is employed in connection with a strap, such as used in many public conveyances for the co'nvenience of the passengers. It has for one of its main ob-jects to provide an advertising device which will attract the attention of the public.
Another object is to provide a device which will cause the user of the strapr, to which the device is attached, to manipulate the strap so as tor ascertain just what is displayed on the device. A further object is to so construct the device that it will not interfere with, or obscure the other advertising matters now generally displayed in public conveyances.
Additional objects are to provide a device which will not in any way interflere with the ordinary usages of the strap; which will not occupy great space; which can be manufactured and installed at a relatively low cost; and in which the advertising matter can be readily changed from time to time.
These and various other objects and advantages will be readily understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawing of preferred embodiments of the invention, in which, however, modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims. In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a side view of the device, shown in its position in relation to the advertising cards now commonly used in public conveyances.
Fig. 2 is a front view of, Fig 1;
Fig. 3 is a bottom view;
Fig. 'i is a slightly enlarged, cross-sectional, end view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a view of Fig. 4 taken in the direction indicated by the arrow A; and
Fig. 6 is a side view of a modification of the device.
Referring now to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, the ordinary strap is shown at IO, the rod on which this strap is swiveled at I, and the advertisements commonly found in trolley cars, elevated and subway trains, buses, and the like, at E2. The invention resides in providing a frame |3 on the socket M on which the straps swivel. The advertisement to be displayed is held in this frame in any suitable manner so that it may be seen from below, as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be noted that by locating the frame as shown, it does not obscure the view of the ordinary advertising cards IZ, when these are looked at, in the direction indicated by the arrow |5, by passengers occupying the opposite seats. While the advertisement placed in the frame may be any ordinary advertisement, I prefer toemploy advertisements which will attract more attention than ordinarily. For example, an advertisement might be placed around the borders of a mirror, leaving a plain space in the mirror in which a person may observe himself. However, I prefer to use a Sign of the so-called changeable type as illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. These signs are generally made by a strip of material |6, which is bent in the manner shown in Fig. 4 so as to form downwardly extending portions l'.
One legend of the sign is printed on the surfaces IG and is visible when the sign is read in the direction indicated by the arrow B. Another legend is printed on the surfaces |9 so as to be read when the sign is observed from the direction indicated by the arrow A, while still another legend is printed on the surfaces 20 so as to be read when the sign is viewed from the direction indicated by the arrow C. A sheet of. glass, or other transparent material 2|, may be placed in front of the sign if desired.
It will be noted that as the person sways and thus swings the strap back and forth, the various legends of the sign will come into view and naturally attract attention, not only to the person holding the strapl but to other passengers in the conveyance.
In Fig. 6 a modification is shown. In this case the strap 22 is provided with two frames 23 and 24v and the strap, as well as the frames, is secured to the support 25 by a leather strap 26. In this embodiment, as in the one previously described, ordinary advertising matters, or changeable signs, may, of course, be employed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that this device does not in any way interfere with the ordinary use of the strap, does not obscure other advertising matters displayed in the conveyance, and is well adapted to attract the passengers' attention.
I-Iaving described the invention and its objects, what I claim as new and wish to protect by Letters Patent is:-
1. In combination with a hand Strap of the type used in public conveyances; a frame secured at or near the upper end of the Strap, substantially at right angles thereto, and transversely with' the strap; and an advertising card inserted in said frame to be displayed from the bottom thereof.
2. In combination with a hand Strap of the type used in public conveyances; two oppositelydisposed frames secured at or near the upper end of the Strap, substantialiy at right angles thereto, and transversely with the Strap; and an advertising card inserted in each of said frames to be displayed from the bottoms thereof.
3. In combination with a hand strap of the type used in public conveyances; a frame secured at or near the upper end of the Strap, substantially at right angles thereto, and transversely with the strap; and an advertsing card, adapted to display different Iegends when the strap is moved so as to expose it to view at different angles, inserted in said frame and displayed from the bottom thereof.
