ELMER F. DORSEY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
CHANGEABLE PRICE AND COMMODITY EXHIBITOR.
Application filed November 9, 1909. Serial No. 527,063.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER F. DORSEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Changeable Price and Commodity Exhibitors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The object of the invention is, to facilitate the exhibition of the changeable prices of commodities, and in such a manner that a merchant or other person may from day to day utilize the same exhibitor to display this changes in tariff on different articles for sa e.
The invention consists in the novel construction and assemblage of parts, which will be first fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1. is a front view of a sign board, with portions broken away to show the invention. Fig. 2. is a vertical, transverse, sectional View, taken on the line 00, w, on Fig. 1. Fig. 3. is a View in perspective of a broken portion of the sign board and of the exhibiting portion as seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a detail view of the sliding strip on the disk, showing different characters on the under side.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring tothe drawings, 10 indicates a rectangular sign board, preferably made from cardboard, or any other material, and of the proper size for suspension upon the wall or other support. In the portion of the sign board at a point equidistant from its upper and lower horizontal edges and upon one side of a line extending vertically through the center of the board is a transverse opening 12, in which isinserted one end of a pivot 14, upon which is a flange 15, which flange is secured to the front or outer surface of the sign board 10, by the rivets 16, the inner port-ion of the pivot extending a considerable distance past the line of the inner surface of the sign board.
The changeable exhibitors consist of a flat, revoluble disk 17, which is small in circumference, and having an opening 18, at
17. Upon the surface of the diskadja centto the rear surface of the sign board are printed or afiixed in any other suitable manner, a series of numeral characters, such as the numbers from 1 to 9 inclusive, these numerals being in regular order near the circumference of the disk and at regular intervals apart, in the direction of said circumference.
20 indicates a revoluble disk, larger in circumference than disk 17, and in position adjacent to the rear surface of said disk 17. This disk is provided with an opening 21, slightly larger than the outer circumference of the sleeve 19. Upon the sleeve 19 is a telescopic rotatable sleeve 22, its inner end being connected rigidly with the rear surface of disk 20. This sleeve is shorter in length than sleeve 19. Upon the face or forward surface of disk 20 are printed or aflixed, in any suitable manner, a series of numerical characters, such as the numbers from 1 to 9 inclusive, and the character 0, these numerals being spaced apart in the direction of the circumference of the disk, at regular intervals.
24 indicates a revoluble disk larger in circumference than the disk 20. This disk is provided with a central opening 26, slightly larger than the outer circumference of sleeve 22, and is positioned adjacent to the rear surface of disk 20. Extending around the sleeve 22 is a revoluble, telescopic sleeve 27., its inner end being rigidly connected with the rear surface of disk 24. This sleeve is shorter in length than sleeve 22.
In the sign board 10, directly opposite the surfaces of the disks 17 and 20, provided with the numeral characters and in line horizontally with the pivot 14, is a rectangular shaped sign opening 28. Beyond said opening and opposite the outer portion of the disk 24 extending beyond the disk 20, are the longitudinal slots 29 and 30, the slot 29 being located above a line horizontal with the upper edge of the opening 28, and the lower slot 30 a short distance below a line horizontal with the lower edge of said opening 28. To the said extended portion of the disk 24 and the surface movable past the slots 29 and 30, is secured a strip of flexible material 31, such as parchment paper, which is of the proper width to pass through the slots 29 and 30, and curved in the same are of a circle as the disk 24. This strip 31 is preferably short in length, and is attached to the disk 2 1 from the outer side of the sign board 10, one end of the strip being inserted through the slot 29, and secured at 31 to the surface of the disk 24 a distance above, by the means of any adhesive substance such as glue, and the other end inserted through the slot 30, and secured at 31, to the surface of the disk in like manner and at a considerable distance from the other end of said strip 31, the length of the strip being as shown approximate to onefourth the circumference of the disk. Upon the strip 31 are characters, such as fractions, printed or otherwise aflixed to the strip. These fractions which in ordinary commercial business are adapted to express less than the units of value in the price of commodities in the market, may be varied, and therefore one or two instances are given, and which may be placed on a short length of strip 31 which strip may be removed and another substituted, with the fractions printed or aflixed in various multiples, such as in grain tallies.
In the employment of the exhibitors the number on the disks 17 and 20 are from 1 to 9, on disk 17, and from 1 to 9 inclusive, and the character 0, which affords the combinations necessary for ordinary use. When the larger numbers are of necessity, another disk may be used. The disks are conveniently rotated by means of the thimbles 19, 22 and 27, which are of varied lengths, enabling the fingers to manipulate the outer ends of the said thimbles respectively, the strip 31 passing readily upon the outer surface of the card board, through the slots 29 and 30, the latter strip 31 being at once removed when required, and another substituted containing other fractions or characters, or such as seen in Fig. 4, in which the reverse side of the strip 31 is provided with the commodities printed thereon. The fitting of the sleeves 19, 22 and 27 may be made so as to render the disks less likely to be accidentally moved when once placed in position. Vhen employed the sign board is suspended by the cord 43.
Such modifications may be employed as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I new claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A changeable exhibitor comprising a sign board having a sight opening and slots one above another adjacent to said opening, revoluble disks varying in circumference on the back of the sign board, provided with characters placed to be displayed through said sigh-t opening, and a curved strip having its ends extending from the outer surface of said sign board through said slots and connected with the face portion of one of said disks, and provided with suitable characters.
2. A changeable exhibitor comprising a sign board having a rectangular sight opening, and slots one above another and adj acent to the inner end of said sight opening, a pivot extending through the sign board from the back thereof and provided with a flange secured to the forward or outer surface of the sign board, a number of revoluble disks varying in circumference on the back of the sign board mounted on said .pivot provided with suitable characters and having central openings varying in size, telescopic sleeves on said pivot connected with the respective disks, a curved, flexible strip upon the outer surface of the sign board having its ends extending through said slots and detachably connected with the face portionof one of said disks, said strip having suitable characters applied thereto.
