To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GULL O. BRAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Osage, in the county of Mitchell and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Sad- Iron, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sad-irons, and more particularly to that class of sad-irons in which the handle is detachable from the body ofthe iron.
The object of the invention is to improve, simplify, and cheapen the construction of devices of this character and to increase the strength and stability of the coupling between the handle and the base of the iron by the addition of an auxiliary lock or fastening device.
A Jfurther object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting` the handle longitudinally of the iron, whereby the latter may be conveniently used for pressing the inte rior of sleeves or other portions of a garment inaccessible to an iron provided with the usual rigid or non-adjustable handle.
A still further object of the invention is to form the spring-latch with a terminal tongue adapted to engage a locking-lip on the handle of the iron, thereby affording additional security to the handle and eifectually preventing accidental displacement of the parts.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details oit' construction may be resorted to without departing from. the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of 'this speciiication, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a flat-iron, showing my impjroved detachable handle applied thereto.

The improved device may be applied to any of the various forms of sad-irons or poland other operators, and for purpose of illustration is shown applied to an ordinary iiat-iron, in which 5 designates the base or body portion of said iron.
Extending longitudinally of the base 5 and secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by screws 6, is a plate or rib 7, provided with laterally-projecting guide-flanges 8, adapted to engage corresponding inwardly-projecting ianges 9, carried by the frame 10 of the detachable handle 11. The frame 10 is prefer-I ably stamped from a single piece of metal the opposite ends of which are curved upwardly, as shown, and fastened to the handle proper, as by screws or similar fastening'devices 12. interposed between one end of thev handle 11 and the adjacent end ot the frame 10 is the xed end of a spring lever or catch 13, the free end of which is provided with a Enger-engaging knob 1'4.
Secured to the lever or catch 18 is a depending lug 15, adapted to engage any one of a plurality of openings 16, formed in the rib' or plate 7, so that by adjusting the handle longitudinally on said plate the handle may be shifted to either end of the base 5 to thereby permit the latter to be readily introduced into the sleeve of a garment in order to press the same. lA depending lug or base 17 is stamped or otherwise formed in one end of the base of the frame 10 for engagement with grooves or recesses 18, one of which is preferably formed in each end of the plate 7, as
shown, said lug serving as a stop 'to limit thelongitudinal movement of the handle and properly position the same on the base 5.
As a means for preventing accidental displacement of the handle after the same has been adjusted l form the springcatch or' lever 13 with a terminal tongue 19, adapted to engage a locking-lip 20, the latter being produced by making an incision in the frame 10 and stamping the vmetal upwardly, so that the free end of the lip will be disposed slightly above the horizontal plane of said frame, as shown. It will thus be seen that after the handle is adjusted, the same may be locked against accidental displacement by simply ishing-irons, but is more particularly applicable to pressing-irons employed by tailors IOO grasping the knob with the fingers and pressv ing the same laterally and downwardly until the tongue engages the locking-lip, when the parts will be irmly locked together.
In Figs. 4 and 5 there is illustrated a moditied form of the invention in which the device is shown applied to a tailors iron 21. In this case the longitudinal rib or plate 6 is formed integral with the body of the iron, while the locking-lip 20 is formed in one of the end walls of the frame l0 and the terminal tongue of the spring lever or catch is curved upwardly, as indicated at 22, for engagement therewith, as shown.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the handle may be readily placed in position from either end of the plate or rib and that said handle may be adjusted longitudinally of the iron by simply elevating the springlever and sliding the handle on the rib to the desired position.
It will of course be understood that the longitudinal plate may be cast or otherwise formed integral with the body of the iron or detachably secured thereto, as desired, and that as many openings may be formed therein as may be found necessary to the proper adjustment of the handle.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. A sad-iron having a longitudinally-adjustable handle removable from either end of the iron, a main locking member carried by the handle for securing Said handle in adjusted position, and an auxiliarylocking member for positively locking the main member.
2. A sad-iron having a longitudinally-adjustable handle, a spring-lever carried by the handle for locking the latter in adjusted position, and means forming part of the handle for positively locking said lever.
3. A sad-iron having a longitudinally-adjustable handle, and main and auxiliary locking members for positively locking said handle in adjusted position. f
4. In a sad-iron, a base provided with a plurality of recesses, a longitudinally-adjustable handle slidably mounted on the base, a lever provided with a depending lug adapted to engage said recesses for locking the handle in adjusted position, and an auxiliary lockv'1ng member carried by said lever.
5. In a sad-iron, a base provided with a longitudinal rib, a longitudinally-adjustable handle slidably mounted onthe rib, alever carried by the handle and adapted to engage said rib for locking the handle in adjusted position, and an auxiliary locking member carried by said lever for locking the latter.
6. In a sad-iron, a longitudinally-adjustable handle slidably mounted on the base, a lever carried by the handle and adapted to engage the base for locking the handle in adjusted position, and an auxiliary locking member carried by the lever for positively locking said lever in engagement with the handle.
7. In a sad-iron, a base, a longitudinallyadjustable'handle slidably mounted on the base and provided with a locking-lip, and a lever carried by the handle and adapted to engage the base for locking said handle in adjusted position, said lever being provided with a terminal tongue adapted to engage the locking-lip.
8. In a sad-iron, a base provided with a longitudinal rib having a plurality of recesses formed therein, a longitudinally-adjustable handle slidably mounted on said rib and provided with a depending lug adapted to engage the end of said rib, a lever carried by the handle and provided with a lug adapted to engage the recesses for locking said handle in adjusted position, and a locking-lip carried by the handle, said locking-lip being adapted to engage the end of the lever.
9. In a sad-iron, a base having a longitudinal rib provided with laterally-extending flanges, a longitudinally-adjustable handle slidably mounted on said rib and comprising a frame stamped from a single piece of metal the longitudinal edges of which are bent to form guiding-flanges adapted to engage the flanges on the rib, a spring-lever carried by the handle and adapted to engage the rib for locking said handle in adjustedposition, and an auxiliary locking member carried by said lever. v
10. In a sad-iron, a base provided with a longitudinal rib having a recess formed in one end thereof and a depression in the other, a handle slidably mounted on the rib and provided with a depending lug adapted to engage the depression for limiting the longitudinal movement of the handle, a locking member secured to the handle and adapted to engage the recess in the longitudinal rib and an auxiliary locking device carried by the handle for retaining the locking member in operative position.
