Description

'D. PUTN AM.
Lifting-Jacks.
' Patented September 2,1873.

lMPROVEWlENT EN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,510, dated September 2, 1873; application filed July 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELoss PUTNAM, of Stockton, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin gdrawin gs forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a view representing the standard or support in elevation and the lever in section, the locking-cam being also in elevation.
A represents the standard or support connected with a suitable base, and provided with a series of steps or notches, a, made either in the material of the standard, or of metal and attached thereto, as maybe deemed most desirable in the manufacture. B represents a lever, having a slot or mortise, b, in it, through which the support A passes. EX-
' tending across the mortise and through the leverB is a metal pin or rod, 0, which catches in some one of the notches a of the support, form ing thereby the rest and fulcrum of the lever. The endof the lever may be faced with a metal lip, d, if desired, to give it a good hold and prevent wear. In the rear .end of the mortise or slot in the lever B, and directly behind the standard or support, is pivoted a cam-catch or pawl, O, as shown, which, when the lever is operated, catches on the standard and holds the lever at whatever point it may be brought by the operator Without any loss of motion or danger of slip.
The operation. of this jack is as follows: Arrange the lever B with the handle end up, and place the bolt or rod 0 in such notch as to bring the top face of said lever against the body to be lifted. Then depress the handle end of thelever, the cam-catch being forward against the standard, when the weight will be raised and the lever automatically locked at any desired point. To unlock the lever depress it, and at the same time draw the camcatch back out of contact with the support.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- l. Alever and cam-catch,when combined for operation, as shown and described.
2. The combination, substantially as herein shown'and described, of a lever, a ca-m'catch, and the notched standard, for the purposes specified.
DELOSS PUTNAM.
