IMPROVEMENT IN HAY-KNIVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,020, dated May 21, 1878; application filed April 21, 1878.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DAVID L. GARVER, of

Hart, in the county of Oceana and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hay-Knives and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciflcation, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. I

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my hay-knife, and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.

My invention relates to that class of hayknives which are known as bevel-cut hayknives. V

In operating the ordinary bevel-cut hayknife it is necessary to not only press downward, but also to press horizontal, in order to hold the knife snug against the hay. Consequently it requires a perpendicular and also a side pressure in order to work the knife.

My improvement is intended to obviate the necessity of any horizontal pressure in oper-' atin g the knife.

To this end the nature of my invention consists in a flange attached to the upright portion or stock of the knife, said flange standin g at right angles to the cut of the knife, and when the knife is thrust into the hay the flange counteracts the tendency of the knife to slide by, but compels it to pass straight downward and cut its way.

In the annexed drawings, A represents the stock with the step B. O is the beveled knife; D, the brace, and E the handle. These are precisely the same as a class of hay-knives now in use.

F is the flange attached to the stock, and

which constitutes my improvement. This flange F is attached to the front edge of the vertical bar G, constituting a part of the stock A, by means of rivets or other suitable fastening devices. In some cases the flange may form a component part of the bar Gr.

' Near the lowerend of the vertical bar is a shoulder, 12, forming a support to the flange F.

I am aware that a wedge-form hay-knife has heretofore been provided with a keel or guide-ridge, formed andcurved at the ends and sides to facilitate the cutting of hay, and to such I lay no claim.

The knife is operated in the usual manner by taking the handle in the right hand and setting the right foot on the step.

In operation the flange F prevents the knife from sliding from the hay, and compels it, when thrust into the hay, to pass straight downward and cut its way.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a bevel-cut hay-knife composed of the stock A, with step B, knife 0, and handle E, the flange F, attached to the vertical bar, for the purposes setforth. I
