BUTTON-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,598 dated May 25, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT HALL, of Oypress Hills, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved button-fastener, which is simple in construction, strong and durable, and which can be applied very easily.

The invention consistsiu the construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out particularly in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part-of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a button provided with my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional elevation of the same on the line a: 02, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the button and fastening, the latter being shown in the position it has when not passed into the fabric. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the under side of the bottom part ofthe button. Fig. 5 is aplan view of the under side of the bottom plate of the button and the shank on said plate.

The button is formed of the top plate, A, the bottom plate, B, and the shank O, which is flattened so as to be longer in one transverse direction of the button than in the other.

The bottom plate, B. has a slot, D, having end notches, E, which are in communication with slots F in the end edgesof the shank O, the said slots F forming apertures G in the bottomedgeoftheshank. Anannulargroove, H, is formed in the under side or surface of the top plate, A, or any other groove or notch is formed in the under side of the plate B above one end slot of the shank C.

The hook J is U-shaped, and has one end pointed and the other provided with a bent part, K, extending over the recess or hollow of the U-shaped hook J, the part K being provided on its end with a prong, L, which can be snapped into the aperture or groove H. The hook is made of spring material, and the part K is made wider than the end slots of the shank.

When the button-is not fastened, the hook J is in the position shown in Fig. 3, and its point is then passed through the fabric N, and the hook is turned to cause the pointed end of the same to project upward and into or through one of the end slots of the shank, and the prong L of the hook J snaps into the groove or recess H, and thus the hook is locked in place. The button cannot be withdrawn to remove the prong Lfrom the groove or recess H, as the bottom of the bent part K rests upon the bottom of the shank.

The hook J is locked in place by springtension, requires no special fastening, and the point of the hook is concealed and out of the way. The hook is thus mounted in the shank to swing in the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A button having a slotted shank and a fastening-hook provided with a bent inner end Wider than the remaining part, the wider part of the book being within the shank, and the other part extending outside of the shank, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with a button having a flattened shank provided with slots at its ends, of a fasteninghook having its inner end flattened and widened and bearing against the end of the shank, the outer end of the hook extending beyond the shank, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. The combination, with a button having a recess in the under side of its top plate and a flattened shank on its under side, which flattened shank has end slots, of a hook placed in said shank, and having an end prong which can be placed in the recess or groove in the under side of the top plate, substantially as herein shown and described.

4. The combination, with a button having the top plate, A, provided with a groove or notch, H, in its under side, and having a flattened shank provided with end slots, of the U- shaped hook J, having the widened bend K and the end prong, L, substantially as herein shown and described.
