Description

PATENTED SEPT. 18', 1906.
A. SHARE. PIPE HANGER. APPLIGATI ORIILED JULY19, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT SHARE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD O. REGESTER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. I
PIPE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed ly 19, 1905. SeriaTNo, 270.320.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT SHARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe-hangers.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and efiicient device to support water, steam, and other pipes in posi tion, and is especially adapted for suspending the said pipes from a ceiling.
Other features of my invention will be fully set forth in the accompanying specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hanger, showing the pipes in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same, showing one of the locking-arms turned out of engagement with the pipe-rest. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the pipe-rests.
Similar numerals designate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
. forming part of this specification, 1 designates a fastening device which is screwed to the ceiling or other desired place by screws passing through the holes 2 and is provided with a threaded lower end 3.
The cross-piece 4 is provided with a boss 5,
cast integral therewith, which latter is screwthreaded to fit the threaded end 3 of the fastening device 1. At the outer ends of the cross-piece 4 and also cast integral therewith are the approximately U-shaped pipe-rests 6, the upper ends 7 of which extend above the body portion of said cross-piece 4 and are curved outwardly in opposite directions which serve to guide the pipes into the rests 6. These upwardly-extending ends 7 are each provided with a notch 8, which extends from the back edge about one-half the width of the said ends and are adapted to receive the locking-arms 9 and hold the latter in position against any upward strain. The locking-arms 9 are pivoted to the cross-piece 4 at 10 and are each provided with two notches 11, into which the upwardly-projecting ends 7 project when the said arms are in the locked position.
The device is operated as follows: The fastening 1 being secured in the desired position 7 the cross-piece 4 is then secured to the said fastening by screwing the boss 5 to the threaded end 3. The said cross-piece 4 now being secured in the desired position, the looking-arms 9 are turned at right angles to said cross-piece which permits of the pipes being placed in the rests 6. After the pipes have been placed in the rests the lockingarms 9 are turned parallel with the crosspie'ce 4 and extend across the rests 6 above the pipes and prevent the latter from being accidentally lifted therefrom or from springing out of the rests, owing to a slight bend in the pipe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A pipe-hanger comprising a cross-piece 4 having an approximately U-shaped pipe rest 6 at each end, the outer ends of said rests extending above the body portion of the cross-piece, and two independently-operated arms 9 pivoted to the said cross-piece and adapted to engage the upwardly-extending portions of said rests to lock the pipes in the rests.
2. A pipe-hanger comprising a cross-piece having an approximately U-shaped pipe-rest 6 at each end, the upper end of each of said rests extending above the body portion of said cross-piece and bent outwardly in opposite directions, two independently-operated arms 9 pivoted to the said cross-piece and adapted to engage the upwardly-extending portions of said rests to lock the pipes in said rests, substantially as described.
3. A pipe-hanger comprising a cross-piece 4 having an approximately U-shaped rest 6 at each end, the outer ends of said rests extending above the body portion of the crosspiece and provided with notches 8 into which the arms 9 fit, and two independently-operated arms 9 provided with notches 11 and pivoted to said cross-piece and adapted to engage the upwardly-extending portions of said rests to lock the pipes in the rests.
4. In a pipe-hanger, the combination of the fastening 1, having a threaded lower end; the cross-piece 4 having a threaded boss 5 adapted to be threaded upon the said fastening, an approximately U-shaped rest 6 at each end of the said cross-piece, the upper ends of the said rests extending above the body portion of said cross-piece and provided with notches 8, and two independently-operated locking-arms 9 pivoted to said cross-piece and adapted to engage the upwardly-extending portions of said rests to lock the pipes in said rests 6, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT SHARE.
