.be readily converted into a clothes-rack,
one in which the parts may be readily assembled and securely retained in place in the formation of either of said devices, and one wherein the bed-sections of the board will be maintained firmly in place and against relative movement during the employment of the device in its primary capacity as an ironing-board.
A further object of the invention is to provide supporting-arms pivotally connected with the frame of the device and adapted to be readily moved to position for the recep- 1310111 of the sections of the board to produce a rac With the above and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ironing-board embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the ironing-bed removed. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the device. Fig. 5 is a section on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is an enlarged section taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a side elevation illustrating the device arranged to produce a clothes-rack. Fig. 8 is an end view of the same. Fig. 9 is a horizontal longitudinal section through one of the members of the ironing-board bed. Figs. 10 and 11 are detail perspective views of the engaging devices carried, respectively, by the ends of alternate bed-sections. Fig. 12 is a perspective giew of one of the hinging and pivoting memers. I
Referring to the drawings, and articularly to Figs. 1 to 6, 1 designates the ame of the ironing-board, which includes a pair of cross members or legs 2, provided with longitudinal slots 3, extending substantially throughout their entire lengths and each having at its lower end a horizontal foot-piece or base 4, said pieces 4 being extended in reverse direetions transversely of the frame, while upon. the upper ends of the members 2 are pivoted arms 5, adapted to normally lie in a horizontal position and to be swung on their pivots to a vertical position. These arms, which normally extend inward in relatively overlapping positions, each consist of a pair of parallel spaced side members 6, having extended transversely therebetween at appropriately-spaced intervals pins 7, constituting bearing members or seats, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
' Arranged upon and supported by the frame 1 is a horizontal ironing bed .or table 8, composed of a plurality, preferably .6, of members or sections 9, arranged in parallel relation and transverse juxtaposition, the meeting edges of the sections being conn cted by dowel-pins 10, adapted to seat in corresponding openings or sockets 11, whereby the sections will be maintained in a common horizontal plane and the bed as a whole rendered firm and steady. Arranged at the longitudinal center of the table is a clamping member or device adapted to prevent relative transverse movement of the sections and comprising a bed-piece plate 12, adapted to' lie beneath and in contact with the lower faces of the sections 9 and having upturned terminal portions or flanges 13, which engage the outer edges of the outermost sections and are perforated for the reception of the ends of a tie element or rod 14, extended transversely through the table, While the arms 5 are normally maintained in their folded position by means of a clamping member or late 15, projecting beneath and engaging the lower edges of the arms, said plate being arranged vertically beneath the member 12 and connected to the latter by means of an adjustable clamping element or bolt 16.
The members or legs 2, which, as before stated, are crossed between their ends, are connected together by means of a transverse bar or member 17, composed of a pair of sections having their inner meeting ends connected, preferably, by means of a hinge 18 and their outer ends pivoted, respectively, by means of horizontal pintles 19 in members or castings 20, each having a pair of spaced ears for thereception of the adjacent end of the bar 17 and an outwardly-projecting cylindrical portion or shank 21, extended in longitudinal alinement with the bar 17 throu h the slot 3 of the adjacent leg 2 and threaded at its outer end for the reception of a clampingformed upon castings 24, adapted to be atcesses 28.
nut 22. It will be observed in this connection 1 that the shanks 21 are free to slide longitudinally of the members 2 in the slots 3, thus to ermit adjustment of the legs for varying the l ieight of the table, and that the parts may be securedin adjusted positions by means of the nuts 22, which serve to clamp the adjacent members 2 against the ends of the castings.
Three of the sections 9 are provided at one end with an engaging member or hook 23,
tached by screws or other fastening devices to the respective sections, while the remaining sections 9 are each equipped at one end with an engaging member or casting 25, likewise secured in place by screws or other fastening devices and presenting a tubular socket or seat 26 to receive one of the pins or hooks 23,- whereby the sections may be connected in pairs and in longitudinal continuance for any desired purpose. The sections are further each provided throughout its en,- tirelength and at appropriately-spaced intervals with a series of perforations 27 and adjacent each of its ends upon one of its side edges with substantially semicircular re- In practice when the parts are assembled,
mitting the sections 9, composing the be to be disconnected and the arms 5 turned to a vertical position, after which the sections are arranged in vertically-spaced order to rest, respectively, on the pins 7 between the spaced bars 6 of the arms, thus constituting the bars of the rack. Furthermore, when the parts are arranged for this purpose the sections of the connecting member 17 will be swung downward upon their pivots 19, as illustrated in Fig.8, thus permitting the members 2 to appreach each other transversely for bringing the arms 5 into alinement, whereby the members 9 may seat readily adjacent their opposite ends between the bars 6 of the arms, as heretofore stated.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple device in which the number of parts is reduced to a minimum and one which in practice will admirably perform its functions to the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the class described, a supporting-frame including normally horizontal arms, a bed sustained thereby and comprising a plurality of longitudinal sections, a bedpiece having end portions for engagement-at the edges of the outer sections, a tie element extended through said end portions and sections, a clamping member arranged beneath the arms and a clamping element connecting said member and bed-piece.
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting-frame including pivoted normally horizontal arms, a bed sustained thereb and comprising a pluralityv of longitudinal sections, a bed-piece connected with the frame and having end flanges for engagement at the edges of the outermost sections, a tie element removably extended through said sections and engaged with said flanges, a clampingplate arranged beneath the arms, and a clamping element connecting the said plate and bed-piece.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
