To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HALLEY E. DARLING, citizen of the United States, residing at Prineville, in the county of Cook and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in folding beds.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved folding bed. whereby it may be quickly and readily taken down and set up and when taken down may be rolled into a. compact and small bundle.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for locking the bed in set up or open position to prevent the same from becoming accidentally folded or collapsing when being used.

A further object of this invention is to provide a bed or cot, which may be easily and quickly set up or taken down by virtue of the providing of end rails, each having pivotally secured thereto, sectional side rails and hinged legs, and pivoted brace rods for holding the legs and side rails in set up position.

A still further object of this invention is toprovide a bed of this character, which will be simple, durable and efficient, and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.

WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the end rails of my improved bed, which is adapted to have secured thereto, a suitable fabric to constitute a spring. The end rails 5, each have secured to the under side thereof and at one end, a spacing block 6.

A plurality of hinges 9 are secured by one of their leaves 10 to the under side of the end rails 5 respectively and at the opposite ends thereof. It being understood that the leaves 10 of the hinge are secured to one end of the bars 5 and secured to the spacing block 6, as clearly shown in the figures of the drawings An angle plate 11 has one flange extended laterally as at 12 to provide an attaching member. The edge of the attaching member and other flange of the plate 11 is secured to the legs 13, which legs are then secured to the leaves let of the hinges 9 as shown, thus positioning the plate or 1nember 11 on the exterior thereof, and the attaching member projecting beyond the plane of one side face of the legs 13 respectively.

A pair of sectional side bars comprise the sections 15 and 16 respectively. The sections 15 and 16 respectively when connected together constitute the side bars of a bed or cot.

The sections 15 of each side bar are provided at their inner faces at spaced distances apart with the plates 17 which have arranged centrally thereon, the laterally projecting lugs 18 having enlarged heads 18 and the lugs 18 of the sections 15 are adapted to engage any one of the spaced apertures 19 formed in the plates 20 carried by the sections 16 of the side bars, thus connecting the inner ends of the sections together in the manner illustrated in Fig. 9.

The sections 16 of the side bars carrying the apertured plates 20 are provided withrecesses 19 in direct alinenient with the apertures 19 in the plates 20 and the recesses 19 are all of a diameter larger than the openings 19 to permit the heads 18 of the lugs 18 to engage the edges of the apertures 19 in the plates 20 when in set up position.

It is to be understood that the plates 20 and 17 respectively are countersunk in their respective rail sections 15 and 16.

The free ends of the sections 15 and 16 are pivotally secured to the plates 12 as at 20 and also to the respective hinges as illustrated.

Each end bar 5 is provided on its outer side longitudinal edge and adjacent the center thereof with the spaced lugs 21, which ar adapted to receive the notched ends 22 of the pivoted brace members 23, which brace members are pivotally secured as at 2st to each end bar 5, the notched end when not in use is arranged over the pins 21; when the bed or cot is in set up position, it is adapted to engage the pin 25 secured in the legs 13 in the outer side edge thereof.

A sectional brace bar 26 has its sections pivotally connected together as at 27 and the free end of each section is pivotally secured to one section of the side bars as at 28 and one leg 13 as at 29, thus it can be seen that the bed may be readily placed in set up position and held against accidental collapsing by virture of the braces 23 and 27 respectively.

It is to be understood that when it is desired to collapse the bed, it is only necessary to release the braces 23, remove the pins or lugs 18 from their respective openings 19 of the sectional side bars and fold the legs and side bars downwardly against the respective end bars 5 in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and thus the device may be rolled up conveniently in a small package.

WVhat is claimed is:

1. A folding bed comprising end bars,

hinges secured to the under side of the end bars at the terminals thereof, legs, plates secured to the legs and to the hinges, sectional side bars, said sectional side bars being pivotally secured to the plates of the legs, means for removably connecting the inner ends of the sections of the side bars together, and pivoted braces secured to the side bars and end bars and legs for holding the bed against collapsing when in set up position.

2. A folding bed comprising end bars, hinges secured to the under side and at the terminals thereof, legs, plates secured to the legs at one end thereof, said plates and legs being secured to the hinges, a pair of sectional side bars, each section being pivotally secured to the plates and the legs, means for removably connecting the free ends of the pairs of sectional side bars together for forming the side bars of the bed, braces pivotally secured to the side bars and legs, means for removably connecting the free ends of certain of the brace bars to the legs to 1' erniit the bed to be readily collapsed or placed in set up position.

8. A folding bed comprising end bars, legs hingedly secured to the end bars, a pair of sectional side bars, one section of each pair being pivotally secured to the legs, the opposing faces of each section provided with lugs and'apertures for removably connecting the pairs of sections together to constitute the side bars of the bed, and braces carried by the legs and side bars, as and for the purpose specified.

A folding bed comprising end bars, legs hingedly secured to the end bars, pivoted braces secured to the legs and end bars, a pair of sectional side bars, one section of each pair of side bars being pivotally and hingedly secured to the end bars, legs carried by the opposing faces of one section, spaced lugs carried by said legs, legs carried by the opposing faces of the other section and having apertures to receive the lugs to removably connect the sectional side bars together, and pivoted braces carried by the side bars and legs to permit the side bars and legs to fold downwardly on the end bars, as and for the purpose specified.
