2 SHEETSSHEET 2.
I Vi ha woes UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES W. HEARN, OF OOBLESKILL, NEW YORK.
ADJUSTABLE STAND.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mosns 1V. HEARN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cobleskill, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Stand and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined rack, stand, and settee, as clearly illustrated from the drawings; said device having for its prime object to provide a device of this de sign which is novel, simple and efficient in construction, and esthetic in contour; the most essential feature of the device is the peculiar construction, especially the construction at the upper portion of the device, that is, the apex of the triangular portion thereof, in combination with the remaining structure.
This device when folded, is very compact in form and when placed away it takes up a very small amount of space, as will be clearly evident from the drawings, but when unfolded and ready for use, as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, it accomplishes a plurality of functions.
This invention comprises further objects and combinations of elements which will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out by the appended claims.
To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction, combinations of features, elements and advantages, reference is to be had to the hereinafter set forth description and the accompanying drawings in connection therewith, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device as folded. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the device used. as a stand, or settee. Fig. 3, is a perspective view showing the device used as a towel rack. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one of the racks. Fig. 5, is a detail perspective view of the upper portion of the device. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, showing the legs in a different position, and with the board 7 removed. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the bar 5 and the member 3.
Making renewed reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters, indicate corresponding parts in Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 350,265.
the several illustrations, by figures, 1 designates the main supporting legs, which when folded lay parallel to one another and when unfolded, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, they assume the outline of the triangle; these main supporting legs are pivoted at 2 to members 3, which members are recessed, as at 4, in which recesses the cross bar 5 is securely fixed by means of suitable bolts 6, as clearly shown in the drawings, Designed to rest upon the upper edge of said cross bar and members 3 is a board 7, having a pair of brackets S fixed to the under surface thereof, and at each end, each pair of brackets forming a recess 9 in which the cross bar is adapted to fit, so as to prevent displacement of the board 7.
Pivoted between the main supporting legs,
as at 10, are two racks 11 which are hinged together, as at 12; these racks comprise the two parallel side bars 13 which are connected by a plurality of cross strips 14, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
Pivoted to the outer ends of these racks are the supplemental legs 15, the side pieces of which are connected together by means of the rounds 16 which brace the sides of the supplemental supporting legs; these supplemental supporting legs fold within the racks 11 when the device is folded, as shown in Fig. 1.
When the device is unfolded, as shown in Fig. 2, the racks form a resting place for obj ects or a settee; but when the device is used as shown in Fig. 3, the supplemental supporting legs and other portions of the device are capable of use as towel racks.
It is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be employed in the construction and embodiment of the invention, combinations of features, and elements, without in any way departing from the spirit and scope of the invention covered by the claims thereof it being understood that whatever variations or modifications are employed must fall within the scope of the appended claims.
From the foregoing, the essential features, elements and the operation of the device, together with the simplicity thereof, will be clearly apparent, and, when manufactured in accordance with the invention, an inexpensive market will be easily obtained therefor.
The cross bar is flat and its ends project beyond the members 3, at each side of the structure. The upper ends of the legs 1, above their pivots, engage the flat sides of the cross bar to limit their movement when they are fully opened as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The flat sides of the cross bar beyond the members 3, are provided with means to engage the upper ends of the main supporting legs to revent the same from accidental closing; this means comprises a pair of spring hooks 17 at each end of the bar which are designed to engage the upper ends of the main su orting legs, as clearly shown.
To hold the legs 1 in a position as shown in Fig. 3 eye bolts 1 are provided which are chained together as at 1 which eye bolts are inserted in registering apertures 1 and 3 of the upper ends of the legs 1, and the members 3 as clearly shown. There are two sets of these eye bolts to be used as above set forth, and when not in use, these eye bolts are inserted in apertures 3 of the said members 3, as shown clearly in Fig. 5.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful by the protection of Letters Patent is In a device of the class set forth, the combination with the set of main supporting legs; and a pair of racks hinged together pivoted thereto; of a pair of supplemental supporting legs; a head portion, comprising a pair of members to which said main supporting legs are dpivoted, said members having recesses; an a cross bar connecting said members, having portions thereof fixed in said recesses, and leaving its ends to project beyond said members to form abutments for the main supporting legs; the upper ends of the main supporting legs and the said members being provided with registering apertures; eye-bolts chained together, designed to be received by said registering apertures so as to hold the main supporting legs in a position intermediate the closed position of the main supporting legs and the outermost position thereof, said cross bar having at each end, a pair of spring hooks, to hold the main supporting legs in their outermost position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
