UNITED TAT i, QFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRONING AND KITCHEN-TABLES COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,990, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J omv N. VALLEY, of North East, in the county of Erie and in the State of Pen nsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Folding, Ironing, and Kitchen-Table, Bench, &c.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined folding, ironing, and kitchen-table, bench, &c., as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my device, showing it as a bench. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same as an ironing-table. Figs. 3 and 4 repre sent my device folded. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the bench part of my device, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the kitchen-table leaf.
A A represent two bars, of any suitable height, connected by means of rounds a a, thus forming a frame which is pivoted between the two long bars B B at their ends. A similar frame is pivoted between the other ends of the bars B B, thus forming a large frame, of which the bars A A are the four legs or corner posts. 0 is a brace connecting one of the bars B with one of the legs A. One, two, or more of such braces may be used, at will. The brace O is made of wire or a bent rod, with hooks at the ends to be inserted in the bars A B, so that it can be readil; removed when desired. At the upper end of each leg A is an eye, b, for fastenil'lg either the ironing-board D or the kitchen-table leaf E. The ironing-board D is constructed in the usual manner, and is on its under side provided with eyes 12 b arranged to correspond with the eyes I) b on the ends of the legs A A. Pins 01 d are then passed through the eyes I) b ,'o11e at each end, which firmly secure the ironing-board to the supporting-frame. In precisely the same manner the table-leaf E is secured to the same frame, and the ironing-board is then either put away, or may be fastened 011 one side, as a back to the table, by pins passing through the eyes 71 b on the board and through eyes 11 011 the sides of two of the legs A A. Vice versa, when the ironingboard is 011 top the leaf E may form the back, and in either case the brace or braces C may be dispensed with, as the back holds the frame steady. Upon the wide end of the ironing-board D is pivoted a smaller board, D, which may be thrown out at right angles from the large board and be used for ironing smaller articles. The same or another small board, D, may be attached to one end of the table-leaf E, as shown in Fig. 6. G represents a board provided at each end on top with a cross-bar, H, which extends a short distance beyond the edges of the board G. The size of this is such as to fit between the bars B B and the legs A A, the ends of the cross-bars H H resting upon the bars B B, thus forming a bench. for washing or other purposes.
This may also be used as a settee or lounge by having either the ironing-board or leaf attached as a back.
When it is desired to be put away it can readily be folded up, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the connected bars A A provided with eyebolts, the pivoted cross-bars B B, bench G H, and a back, E, with or without the ironing-board D, all constructed as set forth.
2. The combination of the ironing-board D provided with eyebolts, as described, with smaller board D pivoted thereto, the frame A B, as described, the connecting-rods d cl, and the brace 0, all constructed substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of August, 1871.
JOHN N. VALLEY.
