GEORGE VEITOH, OF HERKIMER, NEW YORK.
LOCKrl Specification-of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1906.
Application filed August 2, 1905. Serial No. 272.435.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE VEiToH, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Herkimer, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved means whereby the covers of a book, album, portfolio, or kindred article can be securely locked together, so as to protect the contents thereof against the intrusion of inquisitive individuals.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which will be simple and durable in construction and efficient in operation and which can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing my improved lock applied to a portfolio. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, parts being broken away, of the portfolio, showing the covers open. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the portfolio. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view showing the locking members and portions of the covers to which they are attached.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
This invention is illustrated as a Y plied to a portfolio comprising covers l an 2, which are connected by means of a flexible back 3 and are provided with pockets 4. The free edges of these covers are provided with corresponding notches 5, and a plate 6 is securely attached to the cover l and is provided with downwardly-projecting catches '7, which4 pass through the notch 5. A similar plate 8 is secured to the o posite cover 2 and has a spring-lock 9 hinge thereto, said lock being adapted to swing around in the notch 5 and engage with the catches 7 on the oppo'- site cover. The lock 9 is adapted to be operated by a key l0, so that the device is securely protected against intrusion by outside parties.
Owing to the fact that the cooperating locking members fit in the notches 5, the lock is fiush with the front of the article to which it is attached, and there are no external proj ections to catch upon outside articles. The notches 5 also serve as a protection for the hinged joint connecting the lock 9 and the plate 8 and renders it impossible for any one to obtain access to the portfolio without detection by removing the pintle, as might otherwise be the case.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- As a new article of manufacture, a portfolio or the like provided with meeting edges designed to be locked together each 0f said edges being provided with a notch portion the end walls of which produce shoulders, a plate 6 rigidly secured to one of said edges at the notched portion thereof and lying flush" with said edges and provided with catches projecting inwardly through said notch and within the margin of the same, and a lock 9 fitting within the notch of one edge with its ends abutting against the shoulders formed by the end walls of the said notch and having its pintle secured within the notched portion, said lock being designed to extend inwardly toward the plate secured to the other edge and to receive the catches projected from said plate, the ends of said lock fitting snugly between the shoulders formed by the end portions of the notch in the meeting edge carrying the said plate and catches whereby the lock is supported against endwise strain and the pintle thereof protected.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
