UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS SOEVYN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348.245, dated August 31, 1886.
Application filed December-11, 1884. AScrialNo.150,092. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS SoEvYN, of Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof, is a full and complete description.
It is well known that a trunk constructed in the usual manner, having its lid hinged on one side to open one way only, is liable to be placed in a room with the front side to the wall, requiring the tru nk to be reversed before the lid can be opened. This is a very common occurrence in a hotel, boarding-house,or private house, where trunks are handled and moved by porters and expressmen, and usually the wrong position of the trunk is not noticed till the persons who have handled it have departed, rendering it necessary often for the owner to call other help to reverse it.
The object of my invention is to avoid the necessity of thus reversing trunks, which I accomplish by constructing a trunk with a lid hinged and locked on both sides, and capable of being opened on either side, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved trunk. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the trunk.
The lid B and body C of the trunk are constructed in the usual manner. The ordinary hinges are dispensed with and the lid is attached by means of hinges constructed similar to the ordinary hinged trunk-clasps, having the plates a riveted to the sides of the lids, and the hinged hasps b, provided with Ythe loops c, to receive the bolts of the trunk-locks A, attached to the sides of the body of the trunk. Iwo or more of the hinged hasps and of the trunk-locks are attached to each side of the trunk.
Itis evident that my invention does not depend upon any particular construction of the hinges or locks, but any hinge and lock may be employed which are capable of being readily fastened and unfastened, so as to allow the lid to be opened and turned back ou either side of the trunk, as set forth.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the trunk body and lid B C, of the combined locks A and hinged plates and hasps c b, attached to both sides of the trunk, and constructed and arranged substantially as set forth, and adapted to enable the lid to be fastened at both sides, and to be opened at either side of the trunk, as and for the purposes described.
FRANCIS SOEVYN.
