Description

JOHN SPEAR', CARBONDLE, IILLJNOIS.'
Lettere Patent No. 82,653, dated September 29, 1868.

ibe dgmle referat in in tlgse'tsttw @anni mit mating ,unt tf the time.
To ALL 'WHoM 1T MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN SPER, 0' Carbondale, in the county of Jackson, and State of Illinois, have invented a. new and valuable Improvement in Water-Conduits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,.making a part of this specification, and to theletters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figurel of the drawings is a' representation of a sectional view of my conduit, on the line a a of g. 2, andA Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof, on the line y y of fig. 1. i I
The nature of my invention consists in constructing means whereby waterl fron: thejghouse-'roof may be conducted into a cstern, o r into some other receptacle, or upon the ground, at the will of the operator; and
' also in -providing an indica-tor by which the operator may at all times know the exact course th'e water is taking.
The letters A and B respectively represent two pipes above the cistern, one of which leads into-the cistern, and the other to the ground, or to some other water-receptacle.A
Letter C is a box, attached to the side ofthe building by means of nails in the anchesc c c c.
Letter D is an elbow, leading into the box C. It sits loosely around the water-pipe from the roof, in order that it may be easily turned to the right or the left, as may be desirable. i Y
Letter E is a partition, in the box C, which vextendsdownward to the bottom thereof. The'pipes A and B are adjusted in the bottom of the box C, one on each side of the partition E. i I
The letter G is an indicator. It is adjusted on the outside of elbow D, and its point is always parallel with thelower angle of the elbow D. Its oice is, to point out the direction thewater is taking inside of the box G, whetherto the-right or left-hand side of the partition E, and, consequently, whether into the cistern or not.
To operate the conduit, move the indicator in the direction you wish the water to iiow.,A
' What I claiznas'vmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy A conduit for water, lia'ving pipes A. and B, boX C, elbow D, partition E, and indicator G, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
'JOHN SPEAR.
